Film Review: ‘Nil Battey Sannata’ Is a Mostly Winning Tale of Dunces and Dreamers

Swara Bhaskar and Riya Shukla anchor this warm mother-daughter drama, though its tidy ending and narrow idea of ambition blunt some of its promise.

A mother returns to school to challenge her daughter’s conviction that education—and the future it might open—is meant for someone else. That premise gives Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s Hindi drama Nil Battey Sannata its warmth and its central tension: the film believes in aspiration, even when its tidy uplift occasionally pushes too hard.

What is Nil Battey Sannata about?

Chanda Sahay, played by Swara Bhaskar, works in Agra and is raising her teenage daughter, Apeksha—known as Appu (Riya Shukla). Appu has stopped believing that more study is for someone in her circumstances. After she refuses to clear her annual exams, Chanda takes an unexpected step: she enrolls in the same school and studies in Appu’s class. Their shared classroom turns education into a contest between mother and daughter, as well as a chance to understand one another.

The film also stars Ratna Pathak Shah as Dr. Diwan and Pankaj Tripathi as the school’s principal and mathematics teacher. It was directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and released in India on April 22, 2016. Its listed runtime is 104 minutes.

Why the mother-daughter story works

The film’s most persuasive idea is not simply that education can change a life. It is that Chanda refuses to let Appu’s low expectations become the limit of either of their lives. Going back to school makes that refusal concrete: Chanda does not deliver a lesson from a distance but places herself beside her daughter, exposed to the same classroom and its judgments.

Swara Bhaskar and Riya Shukla are the heart of the film. Their performances give the relationship a useful friction: Chanda’s determination can unsettle Appu, while Appu’s resistance is more than a plot obstacle. The emotional appeal comes from watching their bond accommodate rivalry and embarrassment alongside affection. India Today’s Suhani Singh likewise praised the leads and their mother-daughter chemistry in her 2016 review.

Bhaskar described the film’s larger ambition in a 2016 Hindustan Times interview: “For me, it’s a story of dreams. Of course, we have used the device of education to communicate the idea.” That distinction helps explain the movie’s reach. Education is the story’s vehicle for talking about what people are allowed to imagine for themselves.

Comedy, classroom life and a hopeful message

Nil Battey Sannata approaches its subject through comedy and family drama, not as a study of education policy. The classroom supplies the film with comic reversals and a way to make Chanda and Appu’s conflict visible. Tripathi’s performance as the teacher and principal adds a comic presence; Singh singled it out as one of the film’s pleasures.

Tiwari said in the same Hindustan Times interview that “The focus should be on experiment and learning as opposed to just learning by rote.” In the film, that is an aspiration for education rather than evidence about how schools work. The story’s warmth comes from treating learning as an act of curiosity and self-belief, not just a route to passing exams.

Where the film’s optimism becomes too neat

The film’s hope is appealing, but its final uplift can feel preachy. Singh’s review also found the contest between mother and daughter stretched out, and questioned a Sanjay Suri cameo. Those choices can make the film feel less nimble than its premise, especially when it leans on an emphatic resolution to settle the emotional stakes.

There is a sharper limitation in the way the story frames ambition. Its sympathy for people with few choices is clear, yet it can imply that domestic work or driving is a disappointing destination compared with a more prestigious career. That is a narrow measure of a person’s drive. The film is strongest when it argues for the freedom to learn and choose; it is less convincing when it treats particular kinds of work as proof that someone has aimed too low.

Verdict: a warm drama with a qualified uplift

Nil Battey Sannata earns much of its appeal through Bhaskar and Shukla, the intimacy of its mother-daughter conflict and its willingness to make aspiration a family matter. Its comedy and emotional directness keep the education theme accessible, while its stretched contest and overly tidy ending soften the impact. The result is mostly winning: a humane, feel-good drama whose belief in possibility is larger than its occasional insistence on what success should look like.
