Billy Ray’s 2015 Secret in Their Eyes is an English-language remake of Juan José Campanella’s 2009 Argentine film El secreto de sus ojos, released in English as The Secret in Their Eyes. It keeps the story’s unresolved murder and its entanglement with grief and enduring love, but moves the story into a US post-9/11 setting. That change gives the remake a different frame; it does not, in the view of critics such as The Guardian, give the material equal political or emotional force.
Is Secret in Their Eyes a remake of the Argentine film?
Yes. The 2015 film is an adaptation of Campanella’s Oscar-winning 2009 Argentine film, not a separate story with a coincidentally similar title. The original, directed by Campanella and co-written with novelist Eduardo Sacheri, follows a recently retired criminal-court investigator who revisits a 25-year-old unresolved rape and murder while writing a novel about the case. His return also brings him back to Irene, a judge and former colleague he has long loved. Sony’s official synopsis lays out that premise; Latido Films identifies the film’s connection to Sacheri’s novel.
Billy Ray wrote and directed the remake. STX announced its US release for November 20, 2015, and said the filmmakers collaborated with Campanella. That collaboration establishes a connection between the productions, but the remake is not a scene-for-scene copy: it relocates the story and changes its historical frame. What changes when the story moves to the United States?
The setting is not a neutral backdrop. The Guardian argues that the Argentine original is rooted in the country’s “dirty war” context, while the remake places its characters in the United States and uses the post-9/11 period. That contrast changes what the investigation can mean: the original’s crime story sits within a particular national past, while the remake asks its US setting to supply a different source of institutional and moral pressure.

The relocation may make the premise more familiar to an American audience, but familiarity is not the same as dramatic depth. The key question is whether the new context becomes inseparable from the characters’ choices—or functions mainly as a new setting around a story whose emotional architecture already belongs to another place. The Guardian’s review finds the remake unsatisfying in its handling of that material. Its comparison is a critical reading of the films, not a comprehensive account of either country’s history.
Why does the remake feel watered down?
“Watered down” is a judgment, not an objective measurement. The case for the phrase is that the remake retains the outline of an unresolved crime and a long-delayed personal reckoning but, in The Guardian’s assessment, does not make its changed setting carry stakes as persuasive as those in the original. If a story’s historical context helps explain how institutions, private loyalties and justice collide, shifting countries and eras requires more than transferring the plot: the new context must create its own compelling pressure.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critical consensus similarly argues that the remake neither improves on the original nor makes a compelling case for existing alongside it. That consensus, like any review, records a critical opinion rather than a neutral verdict. The useful comparison is not simply whether the remake repeats the same events, but whether its investigation, characters and conclusion make the crime feel as bound up with personal grief and enduring love as the original does. How successful was the original at home?
The original had a substantial Argentine theatrical audience before the US remake arrived. La Nación reported that 2,410,592 people saw it in Argentine cinemas in 2009. That is a reported domestic admissions figure for that year—not worldwide attendance, box office revenue or a current total. Its local reach helps explain why the remake’s relationship to the original is more than a matter of title and plot: it revisits a film with a significant audience in its country of origin. Should you watch the Argentine original?
Yes, if you want to judge what the remake changes and what it loses. Sony’s official page lists Blu-ray and DVD options for the original, though current availability and regional formats can vary. The comparison is most revealing when you pay attention not just to the mystery’s solution, but to how the historical setting, the investigator’s private life and the case shape one another.
