In Grade 6 Filipino, maikling kuwento is a text to understand and discuss: learners may answer questions about what they hear or read, follow events, and describe a character and the story’s setting. The DepEd resources connected with this topic do not identify one required story or edition, so use the title assigned by your teacher when a specific text is expected.

What “maikling kuwento” means in Filipino 6

A short story is not just a plot to retell. Grade 6 Filipino learning materials place story reading alongside comprehension: understanding details, responding to questions, and making sense of how the story unfolds. One DepEd module is titled Pagsagot sa mga Tanong Tungkol sa Napakinggan/Nabasang Pabula, Kuwento, Tekstong Pang-Impormasyon at Usapan, covering questions about heard or read fables, stories, informational texts, and conversations. DepEd Learning Portal, Grade 6 Filipino Quarter 1 Module 1 (published September 30, 2025).

What to look for while reading

Characters and their feelings

Notice who appears in the story and what each character does, says, and feels. A Grade 6 Filipino resource specifically focuses on describing a character through the character’s feelings. Support a description with details from the text rather than relying only on a general label such as “kind” or “brave.” DepEd Learning Portal, “Paglalarawan ng Tagpuan at Tauhan sa kuwento” (published August 31, 2022; competency F6RC-IIa-4).

Setting

Identify where and when the story happens, using details the text provides. Setting can help explain what characters can do and why events unfold as they do. The same DepEd resource addresses describing the setting of a read story. DepEd Learning Portal, “Paglalarawan ng Tagpuan at Tauhan sa kuwento” (published August 31, 2022; competency F6RC-IIa-4).

Events and questions

Follow the events in the order the story presents them, then check whether you can answer questions about important details. A DepEd Grade 6 module package includes activities involving answering questions and sequencing events; it also includes inference and story writing. Those are activities in that package, not necessarily requirements for every class or assignment. DepEd Learning Portal, Grade 6 Filipino Quarter 1 module package (published May 26, 2022).

How to prepare a short-story response

  1. Read or listen carefully. Note the main characters, setting, and events that seem important.
  2. Answer what the question asks. For a detail question, give the relevant detail; for a character question, connect your description to the character’s actions or feelings.
  3. Keep the event order clear. When retelling or sequencing, distinguish what happened first, next, and later.
  4. Explain an inference when asked. Connect your conclusion to clues in the story instead of presenting a guess as a stated fact.
  5. Use the assigned text. If the task asks for analysis of a particular story, confirm its exact title or copy with your teacher or assignment.

A 2025 Grade 6 Filipino lesson exemplar also describes answering story questions and writing skills. The exact work expected depends on the lesson or task. DepEd Learning Portal, Grade 6 lesson exemplar (published February 20, 2025).

Is there one required Grade 6 Filipino short story?

The available DepEd listings establish that Grade 6 Filipino story materials exist, including entries titled “Maikling kwento” and “Maikling kuwento: paglalayag sa puso ng isang bata.” They do not establish that either title is the required story for every Grade 6 class or for this topic. DepEd Learning Portal catalog search results for Grade 6 Filipino short-story materials (accessed October 8, 2026).

If your assignment names a story, use that text. If it does not, ask the teacher which story to read before preparing a plot summary or character analysis; the topic alone does not identify a canonical story or edition.
