Siddharth Anand’s 2024 Hindi action film is most engaging when it puts its leads in the air; several critics found the story less persuasive when it returned to the ground.
What is Fighter about?
Directed by Siddharth Anand and released in theaters on January 25, 2024, Fighter is an aerial-action drama starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone. Its premise puts military pilots and aerial combat at the center of a large-scale Hindi film. Rotten Tomatoes lists the runtime as 2 hours 40 minutes.
The film’s appeal rests on a familiar combination: a high-profile lead pairing, action staged around aircraft, and a strongly patriotic frame. Whether that combination works depends in part on what a viewer wants from the drama between the action sequences.
How well does the aerial action work?
The reviews differ sharply on the spectacle. India Today’s review praises the action scenes, while The Indian Express singles out an aerial sequence. The Guardian, by contrast, finds the CGI-heavy aerial combat flat. These are critical responses rather than a technical verdict: the film’s central attraction is clear, but its impact is not universal.

Do the characters and drama keep pace?
There is more disagreement over the ground-level story. Scroll.in argues that the film gives more attention to action than drama and sags when it leans on patriotic rhetoric. The same review credits Anand with handling his stars well. India Today, meanwhile, praises Roshan and Padukone’s pairing and Anil Kapoor’s supporting performance.
The Guardian sees more humanity in the leads outside uniform, suggesting that the personal moments can be more compelling than the film’s military framing. For viewers drawn to character relationships, those quieter stretches may be welcome; for others, the uneven balance between personal drama and spectacle may make the long runtime feel less focused.

Does the patriotic tone help or hurt?
The film’s patriotic messaging is a point of contention, not a settled measure of its politics. The Indian Express and Scroll.in criticize its bombast or familiar rhetoric, and The Guardian describes it as hyper-nationalistic. Those are the reviewers’ interpretations of the film’s tone. They help explain why some critics found the story less effective when it moved from action into speeches and declarations.
In an interview with Galatta Plus, as reported by India Today, Anand said some viewers did not know what exhilaration to expect from aerial action and described an “initial disconnect.” India Today also reported his claim that “90 per cent” of the country had not flown in planes or been to an airport; that is the director’s explanation, not independently verified population research.

Is Fighter worth watching?
It is passable fare for viewers who want a glossy star vehicle with aerial action, especially if the pairing of Roshan and Padukone is part of the draw. The action has supporters among reviewers, but others found the CGI-heavy combat less thrilling, and several objected to the film’s emphatic patriotic rhetoric. If a grounded character drama is the priority, the uneven storytelling may disappoint.
