The historical spine is real—the brothers’ succession conflict ended with Aurangzeb on the throne and Shah Jahan confined in Agra Fort—but the spirit communications belong to the fictional setup.
What is historical, and what belongs to the fiction?
Shah Jahan ruled the Mughal Empire from 1628 to 1658. When illness raised the question of succession, his sons fought for power. Shah Jahan had nominated his eldest son, Dara Shukoh, as successor, according to the V&A. Aurangzeb defeated his rivals, proclaimed himself emperor in 1658, and forced his father from power. Shah Jahan spent the rest of his life under confinement in Agra Fort.
“Elbowed out” is therefore best understood as political displacement, not a voluntary or peaceful transfer. The historical sources establish the succession struggle and Shah Jahan’s confinement; they do not establish séances or communication with spirits.
Why did Aurangzeb take the throne?
Shah Jahan’s illness precipitated a contest among his sons over who would rule. Although Dara Shukoh had been designated as heir, that designation did not settle the matter. Aurangzeb emerged victorious in the struggle and took the throne in 1658. The available sources support that outline, but this premise alone does not identify a particular novel or provide a fuller account of the campaign’s events.

Was Shah Jahan imprisoned by Aurangzeb?
After Aurangzeb seized power, Shah Jahan was held in Agra Fort for the final nine years of his life. The Royal Collection describes the outcome directly: “In the end, Prince Aurangzeb forced his father to abdicate and seized the throne for himself.” This is the institution’s account, not a quotation attributed to a historical eyewitness. The Royal Collection gives the broader context of Shah Jahan’s reign and its courtly culture.
What did Mughal court chronicles say about the succession?
The Padshahnama offers a rich example of how the Mughal court represented its own rule, but it should not be read as a neutral account. Shah Jahan commissioned it as an official chronicle proclaiming his dynasty’s political and ideological legitimacy. The Royal Collection’s surviving illustrated manuscript was written in 1656–57, covers the first decade of Shah Jahan’s reign, and combines Persian prose and verse in an ornate presentation.
The Library of Congress description of the Padishahnama, also called the Shahjahannama, places the work in the Persian literary, artistic, and manuscript traditions of the Mughal court. For a story about a writer seeking access to the past, that setting offers historically grounded texture: courtly writing was both a literary practice and a way of recording and framing imperial history.
Later historical synthesis brings a different kind of evidence and limitation. In the introduction to History of Aurangzib, Jadunath Sarkar describes official annals drawing on state papers, correspondence, newsletters, treaties, and revenue records. He also notes that emperors read and revised the annals before public presentation, with potentially discrediting events suppressed or minimized. Such records can preserve substantial detail while reflecting the political priorities of the court that produced them.

How should a reader approach the séance premise?
Read the spirit communications as a fictional device unless the eventual work establishes otherwise. The historical material grounds the setting in a real dynastic struggle and a court culture of Persian chronicles and manuscripts; it does not verify supernatural contact. No author, publication, or plot beyond the premise here is established, so it should not be presented as a confirmed book synopsis.
