If your FFmpeg YouTube Live stream looks blurry, first check the encoded output dimensions and frame rate, then compare the video bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendation for the codec and mode you are sending. Also check upload capacity and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Blur alone does not identify a single cause: insufficient bitrate, an unsuitable output size, encoder or delivery constraints can all be involved.
Start by checking what FFmpeg is actually sending
Before changing settings, record the source’s width, height, frame rate and pixel format, along with the encoder implementation (for example, libx264, NVENC, QSV or AMF). Then verify the encoded output’s dimensions and frame rate from FFmpeg’s logs or the output metadata. Do not assume a command produced the intended result just because a scale or frame-rate option appears in it.
- If the source is smaller than the output, upscaling will not restore detail that was never captured.
- If the output is smaller than intended, or the frame rate is unintentionally low, correct that before judging the bitrate.
- Preserve the source aspect ratio when scaling; otherwise the image may be distorted as well as soft.
These checks separate a source or sizing limitation from a bitrate or delivery issue. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and checking stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder settings guide also recommends checking upload speed and using a reliable connection.
Choose a bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate
Bitrate needs depend on the ingestion codec, output resolution, frame rate and how much motion is in the picture. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, gives these figures in Mbps. They are platform recommendations, not guaranteed quality thresholds or measured outcomes.

| H.264 output mode | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Use the row matching the resolution and frame rate actually being encoded, and use the column for the codec you ingest. YouTube’s table has different recommendations for other codecs, so do not transfer an H.264 figure to H.265 or AV1 by assumption. See the live YouTube bitrate and resolution guidance for the current codec-specific table.
The chosen stream rate also has to fit the available upload connection. YouTube advises testing connection speed and stream quality; allow for audio and network variation rather than treating a speed-test result as guaranteed sustained capacity. If the connection cannot reliably support the selected mode, test a lower resolution or frame rate and use that mode’s corresponding bitrate guidance.

Set FFmpeg rate control and keyframes carefully
FFmpeg’s generic -b:v option specifies a video bitrate, but setting it alone does not establish constant bitrate behavior for every encoder. The exact rate-control options vary between libx264, NVENC, QSV, AMF and other implementations. Consult the documentation for the encoder you actually selected; configure its CBR mode and target using the matching YouTube recommendation. Do not copy encoder-specific flags into a different implementation without checking their meaning.
FFmpeg documents -maxrate as a maximum-rate control used with -bufsize; these are not interchangeable with the target bitrate. The generic options are described in the FFmpeg documentation and the FFmpeg codecs documentation. A maximum rate and buffer can shape rate-control behavior, but they do not by themselves prove that the chosen encoder is operating in the intended CBR mode.

YouTube recommends a keyframe frequency of two seconds and says it should not exceed four seconds. FFmpeg’s -g value is a number of frames, so calculate it from the output frame rate: at 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames (-g 60); at 60 fps, it is 120 frames (-g 120). If the output frame rate changes, recalculate the GOP size instead of leaving a frame count that represents a different interval.
Scale only when the source and delivery mode call for it
Choose output dimensions intentionally and keep the source aspect ratio. Downscaling reduces spatial detail but can make a lower-resolution stream more practical when bandwidth is constrained; upscaling cannot create missing source detail. Verify that the scale filter’s output is the size the encoder receives.

No universal scaler choice is established for this problem. The available guidance does not show that lanczos, bicubic or bilinear is always sharpest or cures YouTube blur. If the image remains soft after checking source, output, bitrate and delivery, compare candidate filters using the same representative frames and output dimensions. Judge both fine detail and motion, changing only the filter between comparisons.
Run a controlled test before going live
- Inspect the source. Record width, height, frame rate, pixel format and the encoder implementation used by your FFmpeg command.
- Verify the encoded output. Check actual output dimensions and frame rate in logs or metadata; correct unintended scaling, enlargement or low frame rate.
- Select the matching bitrate. Use YouTube’s current recommendation for the ingestion codec, resolution and frame rate.
- Configure rate control and GOP size. Use the selected encoder’s documented CBR controls and set a two-second keyframe interval as a frame count for the output rate.
- Check upload capacity. Confirm that the connection can sustain the stream, with room for audio and variation.
- Test representative content. Include movement and audio similar to the real stream, then inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
- Isolate remaining problems. If blur persists, compare a short local encode with the live output and change one setting at a time. This helps distinguish encoding from delivery behavior; it does not presume a particular cause.
YouTube says it transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That means a viewer’s playback rendition may differ from the incoming feed; check the stream’s health and the rendition being viewed before concluding that a scale filter caused the softness.

Common causes and fixes
- Bitrate copied from another mode: match the codec, output resolution and frame rate; YouTube’s recommendations vary across all three.
- Target and maximum rate confused: FFmpeg distinguishes bitrate, maximum rate and buffer size. Check the selected encoder’s rate-control documentation rather than relying on a lone
-b:voption. - GOP value treated as seconds:
-gcounts frames. Convert the two-second interval using the output frame rate. - Low-resolution source enlarged: retain a suitable source-sized output or accept that scaling cannot recover absent detail.
- Unexpected frame rate: inspect input and output metadata. A dated FFmpeg-user discussion from 2020 raised a two-fps image input and duplicate frame-rate options in one specific command; that example is a reminder to inspect the actual command, not evidence of a universal FFmpeg rule.
- Upload instability or encoder strain: check YouTube’s health messages and connection capacity before changing the scaler or buying hardware. The symptoms alone do not establish a hardware fault.
