For a typical 720p SDR YouTube Live stream encoded as H.264, start with constant bitrate (CBR) at 8 Mbps, AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, and a keyframe interval of about two seconds. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum H.264 bitrate for both 720p30 and 720p60. For a single looping file, FFmpeg’s -re -stream_loop -1 can pace and repeat the input; a playlist of multiple files needs a compatible input design and an end-to-end test.

Recommended settings for 720p YouTube Live

YouTube’s current encoder recommendations list the same H.264 bitrate figures for 720p30 and 720p60. They are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that your source, encoder, or connection can sustain the stream. Leave upload headroom and check YouTube’s stream health during testing.

Setting Starting value or choice
Video codec H.264 for the example below; YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1
Resolution 1280 × 720; the command below does not resize the input
Frame rate Match the source where possible; choose 30 or 60 fps deliberately
H.264 video bitrate 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum for both 720p30 and 720p60
Rate control Constant bitrate (CBR)
Keyframes About every two seconds
Audio AAC stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps
Ingest protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS
SDR video characteristics Rec. 709, square pixels, progressive scan, 8-bit depth

These values follow YouTube’s live encoder settings. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder and options.

FFmpeg command for one infinitely looping file

This example expects input.mp4 to contain both video and audio. Replace the ingest placeholders with the RTMPS address and stream name/key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private: do not publish it in a script, repository, screenshot, or log.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_NAME"

Adjust the command to your source

  • Frame rate and GOP: The example sets 30 fps and a 60-frame GOP, which is approximately two seconds. For a different constant frame rate, set the GOP to about twice the frames per second; for example, use 120 frames at 60 fps. Match the source frame rate where practical.
  • Resolution: The command does not force 1280 × 720. Use a 720p source or add a scale filter only after checking aspect ratio and deciding whether cropping is intended.
  • Audio: If the input has no audio, this command will not create one. Map another audio input or generate an audio stream as your production requires.
  • Bitrate: The 8 Mbps video setting is YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p. The total upload requirement also includes audio and transport overhead, so do not plan for a connection whose available upload capacity barely matches the video bitrate.
  • Preset: veryfast is the example’s x264 speed choice. A slower preset may require more processing; check encoder load and stream health rather than assuming one preset suits every machine.

FFmpeg documents -re as reading input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), which is useful when output packet flow matters for live streaming. -stream_loop -1 repeats that input indefinitely. Both are input options, so place them before the relevant -i, as shown. They do not fix missing audio, incompatible media, or an unreliable network. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Build and test a multi-file playlist

The command above loops one file, not an arbitrary sequence of separate videos. For multiple files, a concat input list may work when the media are compatible; other playlists or playout approaches may be more appropriate for mixed formats or transition requirements. There is no universal command here that guarantees seamless joins for every set of files.

  1. Check the files’ codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio streams, and durations. Decide whether they can be concatenated compatibly or need a different playout approach.
  2. Construct the playlist or input arrangement for those specific media. Do not assume that adding -stream_loop -1 to an arbitrary list creates seamless transitions.
  3. Run the complete playlist through the intended encoder and ingest path. Watch the transitions and listen for gaps, level changes, missing audio, or interruptions.
  4. Only schedule a longer broadcast after the exact playlist has behaved as intended in a test.

Connect FFmpeg to the right YouTube event

YouTube’s ingest details include an address and a stream name/key; an encoder may accept them separately or as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. The key is account-specific and should be treated like a password. YouTube’s API documents RTMP, including RTMPS, and lists 720p among supported inbound resolutions: YouTube Live Streams API.

A YouTube broadcast is the watchable event; a stream is the transmission and settings resource used by the encoder. A stream can be reused for broadcasts scheduled at different times. Sending data to the ingest does not, by itself, confirm that the intended broadcast is scheduled or live. Check the event and the encoder feed in YouTube Studio. See YouTube Live Broadcasts API.

Test before relying on a long-running playlist

YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance recommends tests with audio and movement similar to the real event, monitoring stream health and messages, and checking upload bitrate with a speed test. Use a private or unlisted test, or another appropriate test setup, before relying on a long-running feed.

  • Confirm YouTube receives the intended resolution and frame rate.
  • Check that video and audio are both present and stable, including at file transitions.
  • Verify the broadcast’s scheduled/live state separately from whether FFmpeg is sending data.
  • Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators and messages, and check that available upload capacity has headroom.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No video or the wrong resolution The input is not 720p, or the command does not resize it Inspect the source and the received resolution. Add an appropriate scale filter only after checking aspect ratio and cropping.
Stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health Insufficient upload headroom, encoder load, or an input/output problem Check upload bitrate, available capacity, FFmpeg output, and YouTube’s health messages.
No audio The file has no audio stream or the expected stream was not mapped Inspect the input streams; map a suitable audio source or generate one for the production.
Playlist breaks or has an awkward transition Files are incompatible, or the playlist method does not provide the required transition behavior Test the entire sequence, including joins and audio. Use a playlist approach suited to the media rather than assuming a single-file loop applies.
FFmpeg sends data, but the intended event is not live The broadcast event’s state and the encoder stream are separate Check the broadcast schedule/state and the stream’s incoming health in YouTube Studio.
Ingest does not accept the feed Incorrect ingest address or stream name/key, or protocol/configuration mismatch Copy the current private ingest details from YouTube Studio, confirm the selected protocol is supported, and keep the key confidential.
