Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For YouTube Live in 4K with FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder, start with YouTube’s H.264 recommendations: 42 Mbps for 3840×2160 at 30 fps or 50 Mbps for 3840×2160 at 60 fps. Set constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS ingest. For SDR, use progressive video, square pixels, Rec. 709 and 8-bit output.
These are YouTube’s published ingest targets, not a guarantee that a computer can encode 4K in real time. Choose 4K30 or 4K60 based on the motion you need, your available upload capacity and whether your system can sustain the encode.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for 4K H.264
Because libx264 produces H.264, use YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations—not the separate H.265 or AV1 figures. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not state a publication year for these recommendations.
| Output | Recommended H.264 bitrate | Two-second keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|
| 3840×2160 (4K), 30 fps | 42 Mbps | 60 frames |
| 3840×2160 (4K), 60 fps | 50 Mbps | 120 frames |
Use CBR and set keyframes every two seconds; YouTube says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. A two-second interval means twice the frame rate in frames per GOP. For fractional frame rates, calculate using the actual frame rate and verify keyframe timestamps in the resulting stream.

Choose 4K30 or 4K60
4K30
Choose 30 fps when the source and desired presentation do not need the smoother motion of 60 fps. The recommended H.264 ingest bitrate is 42 Mbps. This still demands a substantial, stable upload and enough processing capacity to encode 4K in real time.
4K60
Choose 60 fps when smoother motion matters and the source supports it. YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate rises to 50 Mbps. The higher frame rate also increases encoding workload; YouTube’s specifications do not set a minimum CPU or GPU, so test the actual computer and source rather than assuming a preset will sustain 4K60.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30
-b:v 42000k -maxrate 42000k -bufsize 84000k
-g 60 -keyint_min 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative starting structure, not a universally tested preset or proof of CBR-compliant output. The example uses -preset veryfast, yuv420p and a VBV buffer size as practical implementation choices; YouTube’s recommendations do not prescribe them. FFmpeg documents -b:v as a bits-per-second option, while x264’s own bitrate option uses kilobits per second. Preset selection changes encoding speed/quality behavior, and workload varies by machine and source.
Adapt the command for 4K60
For 4K60, set -r 60, use -b:v 50000k -maxrate 50000k, and use -g 120 -keyint_min 120 for the two-second GOP. Adjust the buffer and other rate-control details for your workflow, then verify the actual stream in YouTube Live Control Room. These values describe the target frame rate and bitrate; they do not establish that your machine can encode it reliably.

Match fractional source frame rates
If your source uses a fractional rate, avoid blindly forcing it to 30 or 60 fps. Set the intended output rate deliberately, calculate the GOP from that actual rate, and check keyframe timestamps. Unintended frame-rate conversion can alter motion or duplicate/drop frames.
Connect to YouTube over RTMPS
- Get the stream destination and key from YouTube. Use the stream-specific primary RTMPS ingest address and stream name/key shown for your broadcast. Do not hard-code a generic destination in a way that assumes one permanent URL.
- Keep the key private. Do not publish it in examples, screenshots, or logs. Anyone with access to a live stream key may be able to send content to that stream.
- Start FFmpeg and inspect Live Control Room. Confirm YouTube is receiving the intended resolution and frame rate before relying on the stream.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP sent across an encrypted SSL connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes stream states including ready, active, inactive and error. A configured stream is not necessarily receiving video: check the state and the actual health details when diagnosing a failure. The API also exposes primary and optional backup RTMPS ingest addresses. See the LiveStreams resource and LiveBroadcasts resource.
Check the stream before going live
- Confirm the source: verify its resolution, frame rate, audio channels and whether it is SDR or HDR; the example command is for SDR stereo.
- Check sustained upload capacity: the connection must carry the chosen video bitrate plus audio and transport overhead. The reviewed platform guidance does not prescribe a universal overhead margin, so test on the actual network and leave practical headroom.
- Watch encoder load and output: sustained overload, dropped frames or an unstable encode indicate the selected resolution, frame rate or settings may exceed the host’s capacity.
- Verify YouTube’s received format: check that Live Control Room reports the expected resolution and frame rate and that audio is present.
- Test long enough to expose instability: a short successful start does not establish that the computer or network can maintain the stream.
Troubleshoot common 4K streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Ingest address, stream key, network access or FFmpeg output | Copy the current stream-specific RTMPS address and key from YouTube, check that the key is private and inspect FFmpeg’s error output and Live Control Room status. |
| Stream starts but shows the wrong resolution or frame rate | Input properties, output options or YouTube detection | Check the source and FFmpeg output settings. YouTube recommends automatic resolution/frame-rate detection by default in Live Control Room; manual selection is available with a custom key. |
| Video stutters, drops frames or the encode falls behind | Encoder workload, source conversion or host capacity | Check CPU/GPU load and FFmpeg output. Try a faster encoding preset, reduce frame rate or resolution, or use a system that can sustain the intended encode. No single preset or minimum hardware is established for all computers. |
| Connection is unstable or YouTube reports ingest problems | Available upload capacity and network stability | Test the sustained connection, account for audio and transport overhead, and reduce the target bitrate or output mode if the network cannot reliably carry it. |
| Keyframe or bitrate warnings appear | GOP length and rate control | Use a two-second keyframe interval, do not exceed four seconds, and verify that the actual output follows the target bitrate behavior. The example command alone does not guarantee CBR compliance. |
| Configured stream appears inactive | No current encoder data, wrong destination or stream state | Distinguish configuration from active ingest using Live Control Room or the API status, then inspect the specific health details and FFmpeg output. |
Copyright and YouTube Live eligibility
Technical settings do not grant rights to stream a documentary, soundtrack, archival clip or other third-party material. Obtain the necessary permissions for every component you broadcast, and check YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements before scheduling. A stream that is technically valid can still be restricted or interrupted for rights or policy reasons. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your use case is a pre-recorded documentary or playlist that should keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not a live camera encoder; it does not replace the FFmpeg workflow when you need to encode and transmit a live production from your computer. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
