For a 720p YouTube Live stream from an Indian VPS, start with H.264 video at a constant 6 Mbps, AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps, and keyframes every two seconds. Use RTMPS on port 443 with the exact ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. These are practical starting settings—not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or upload reliably.
Recommended 720p settings
YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists the same bitrate range for 720p30 and 720p60: 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. A 6 Mbps video target is a reasonable starting point within that range. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced recommendations include AAC at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance is the reference for these platform recommendations.
| Setting | Starting choice | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 1280Ă—720 | 720p ingestion; choose the frame rate to suit the content and encoding capacity. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Use 60 fps only if you want the smoother motion and the VPS can encode it in real time. YouTube permits up to 60 fps. |
| Video codec and rate control | H.264, CBR, 6 Mbps | YouTube lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for both 720p30 and 720p60. |
| Keyframes | Every 2 seconds | Do not set an interval longer than 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | A suitable starting configuration for stereo audio. |
| Ingest | RTMPS, port 443 | Use the stream-specific endpoint and key supplied by YouTube. |
FFmpeg command for a prerecorded 720p30 video
This template loops a local file at normal playback speed, scales it to 1280Ă—720, encodes H.264 at 30 fps and sends it with stereo AAC audio. Replace the input filename and output placeholder with your own values. The command is an example, not a test result for any particular VPS.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-vf "scale=1280:720,fps=30,format=yuv420p"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
-b:v 6000k -minrate 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 12000k
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
Substitute the exact RTMPS ingest address and stream key from YouTube; do not publish a real key in a script, screenshot, or public repository. YouTube documents the required RTMPS scheme and port in its RTMPS ingestion guide. FFmpeg’s documentation covers its input, filtering, encoding, and output options in the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

For 720p60
Change the filter to fps=60 and set -g 120 -keyint_min 120. At 60 fps, 120 frames make a two-second GOP. The YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate range remains the same as for 720p30, but 60 fps can require more encoding work; confirm that your selected VPS sustains it.
For a live capture or another input
The example assumes a prerecorded file. For a capture device or network input, adapt the input options and stream mapping to that source. Remove or change -stream_loop when the input is not a file being looped, and omit -re where it is not appropriate. FFmpeg supports file, pipe, network, and capture-device inputs; consult its documentation for the source-specific syntax.

Choose 30 or 60 fps and configure YouTube
Match frame rate to the material
Use 30 fps for ordinary documentary footage unless the source or intended presentation benefits from 60 fps. Choose 60 fps for motion where the smoother cadence matters, but only after confirming the VPS can encode that frame rate in real time. The platform’s shared bitrate recommendation for both frame rates does not mean every source looks identical at that rate or every VPS has the same encoding capacity.
Set the stream key’s video detection behavior
YouTube says automatic resolution and frame-rate detection is the default and recommended behavior. If you use a custom stream key with manually selected resolution and frame rate, make sure those settings match what FFmpeg sends. Otherwise, leave detection enabled and check the Live Control Room’s stream health after starting the encoder. YouTube exposes health status and configuration issues through its Live Streaming API’s liveStreams resource.

Prepare and test the Indian VPS
An Indian server location by itself does not establish that a VPS has sufficient CPU or a reliable route to YouTube’s ingest servers. YouTube’s encoder requirements describe the outgoing stream, not the compute resources needed for a particular FFmpeg build, preset, input, or number of streams. Validate the plan and region you actually intend to use.
- Check real-time encoding. Run the intended input through the chosen codec, preset, resolution, and frame rate. Confirm the encoder keeps pace rather than falling behind. There is no universal vCPU or RAM figure established for this workload.
- Measure outbound capacity from the VPS. Run a speed test on the actual VPS network path. Check stable upload capacity above the combined video and audio bitrate, with headroom for variation. YouTube explicitly recommends testing upload bitrate in its encoder guidance.
- Use the stream-specific RTMPS details. Copy the endpoint and key from YouTube, keep the key private, and use port 443 as documented in the YouTube RTMPS guide. RTMPS is RTMP over an encrypted SSL connection, as described in the FFmpeg protocol documentation.
- Test representative material. Include audio and motion similar to the planned stream. Start the stream privately or unlisted if appropriate for your channel, then review YouTube’s stream-health messages while it runs.
- Correct flagged settings. If YouTube reports bitrate, audio, or GOP issues, check the status details and adjust the encoder configuration before relying on the stream.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify that the RTMPS endpoint and stream key are copied exactly, the key is current, and outbound traffic can use port 443. Keep the key private.
- Bitrate warnings or unstable health: Check the VPS’s sustained upload speed and FFmpeg’s output rate. Confirm that video is configured for CBR and that the connection has headroom beyond the combined audio and video rates.
- Encoding falls behind: The VPS may not sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, or encoding preset. Test the intended workload and reduce encoding demands—for example, use 30 rather than 60 fps—if the encoder cannot keep up.
- Keyframe or GOP warning: For the 30 fps example,
-g 60sets a two-second GOP; for 60 fps, use-g 120. Keep the keyframe interval at two seconds and no longer than four. - Audio is missing or flagged: Confirm the input contains an audio stream and that FFmpeg maps it as intended. The sample encodes stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz; use FFmpeg stream mapping when automatic stream selection does not select the desired tracks.
- The stream ends when the file finishes: Check that the source is a file and that
-stream_loop -1is present. That option in the example repeats the input indefinitely; it does not make a live capture loop.
Copyright and repeated prerecorded streams
Encoding settings do not grant permission to stream a documentary, soundtrack, archive clip, or other material. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s policies for copyright and monetization before scheduling a long-running repeat. Repeated or reused programming can raise separate channel-policy issues; a technically healthy stream is not proof that the content is cleared or eligible for monetization. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight resource.
