The series is based on Laurence Leamer’s nonfiction book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era. It offers a source account behind the dramatization for readers interested in the real people and events that informed the television story.
Who Tom Hollander and Naomi Watts play
Tom Hollander plays Truman Capote. Naomi Watts plays Barbara “Babe” Paley and is also an executive producer. FX’s cast listing confirms those roles and the rest of the principal ensemble.

When it premiered and where to watch
The original U.S. launch plan, announced by ABC on January 4, 2024, called for two episodes to premiere on FX on January 31, 2024, followed by Hulu availability the next day. That was the series’ initial schedule, not a current release date. FX’s current series page presents the show as available on Hulu; availability may differ by region, so check the service where you live. ABC’s trailer announcement documents the original plan.
The real-world period behind the drama
The Associated Press reported that the series follows Capote from the 1960s through his death in 1984, with production research focused on the period’s clothes and social world. Its February 2024 coverage describes an episode centered on Capote’s 1966 Black and White Ball at New York’s Plaza Hotel; the AP reported that 500 VIPs attended the event. That historical detail gives a sense of the world the series depicts, rather than a measure of the show itself. In the same coverage, Watts praised costume designer Lou Eyrich: “She’s a genius,” she told the AP. “It was fun for all of us. We all love a bit of glamour, let’s be honest.”

The book behind the adaptation
For the nonfiction account that the series draws on, look for Laurence Leamer’s Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era. FX and ABC identify the book as the show’s basis; it is a companion source, not an official tie-in edition.
