Spoilers for episodes 1 and 2. “Pilot” establishes how Truman Capote’s intimacy with New York’s elite gives him both social access and private knowledge; “Ice Water in Their Veins” shows the cost when he turns that knowledge into fiction. Here are 14 reported reveals, from Babe Paley’s marital trouble to the vision that closes episode 2.

Episode 1: “Pilot” — access becomes betrayal

  1. The story opens with an older Capote

A recap places the opening in 1984, with an older Truman looking back toward the Swans. The series then shifts to the earlier events that frame his rise and rupture with the group. FX’s series page presents the show under the tagline “A Swan never forgets.”

  2. The main story moves to 1968

The episode’s central setup takes place in 1968, when Capote is close to Babe Paley and welcomed into the society circle. In the series, that access is built on trust and familiarity—not simply on his reputation as a witty guest.

  3. Babe knows about Bill’s affair

The episode recap describes Babe as aware that her husband, Bill Paley, is having a long-term affair with Mary “Happy” Rockefeller. The series makes this private fracture part of the marriage Babe must navigate, rather than a secret Capote discovers for her.

  4. Capote advises Babe to use the situation

In the series, Capote encourages Babe to turn Bill’s affair to her advantage. The advice shows how his closeness gives him influence: he is not only hearing confidences but also helping shape how a friend might respond to them.

  5. Dinner invitations deepen his access

The recap describes Bill and Babe inviting Capote to dinner. These gatherings place him inside the circle where personal stories circulate, and help explain why the line between confidant and observer becomes so consequential.

  6. His social world feeds his writing

TIME reports that Capote drew inspiration from his social life and wrote a thinly veiled tell-all excerpt from his unfinished novel Answered Prayers. The series’ central tension follows from that overlap: the people who trust him socially become material for his work. TIME’s account of the series’ historical background describes the book’s basis and the real-world publication.

  7. Ann Woodward is the episode’s “killer story”

FX’s official extra for episode 1, titled “Truman’s Killer Gossip,” spotlights Capote telling dinner guests a story about Ann Woodward and allegations surrounding her late husband. FX describes the scene as Capote “seduces dinner guests with a killer story about Ann Woodward (Demi Moore) regarding the allegations of her late husband.” That official synopsis highlights this plot point; it is not a transcript of the full episode. FX’s episode extras include the clip.

  8. Woodward’s story has grave consequences

A recap reports that Ann dies by suicide after the revelation in the episode. It is a devastating turn in the series, not a detail to treat as clever gossip or as proof that a dramatized scene documents every historical circumstance. Brit + Co’s episode recap describes the plot beat.

  9. Slim Keith challenges Capote’s control of the story

The episode recap depicts Slim Keith positioning herself against Capote and determined to show that he will not have the last word. Her resistance introduces a counterforce to his usual command of the room: the people he writes about can contest his version of events.

  10. “La Côte Basque 1965” turns private knowledge into public betrayal

The rupture is not just a matter of Capote telling stories at dinner. TIME identifies “La Côte Basque 1965” as a 1975 Esquire excerpt from Answered Prayers that exposed secrets of Capote’s friends. Its publication makes the threat to his place in the circle concrete.

  11. The fallout pushes Capote out of elite circles

TIME reports that readers recognized themselves in the excerpt and that Capote was pushed out of elite social circles. The Swans’ response, as the series presents it, is shaped by the publication’s breach of trust—not merely by the fact that Capote was a writer among socialites.

Episode 2: “Ice Water in Their Veins” — fallout and a final vision

  1. The series follows Capote’s decline after the excerpts

TV Insider describes Capote as struggling with alcohol abuse and erratic behavior after the betrayal, while the Swans are alienated by the excerpts. The episode moves from the social consequences of publication toward the personal unraveling that follows. TV Insider’s coverage of the premiere and episode story recounts this arc.

  2. Joanne Carson’s Thanksgiving gathering becomes the setting

Capote attends a Thanksgiving gathering at Joanne Carson’s home. The episode-specific account places him drinking and behaving erratically there, before the final scene shifts away from the Swans’ social conflict and toward a deeply personal encounter.

  3. Jessica Lange appears as Capote’s late mother

Episode 2 ends with Capote seeing a vision—or ghost—of his late mother, Lillie Mae, played by Jessica Lange. FX’s official extra also describes Truman being greeted by his late mother’s ghost, who “gives him a taste of the truth.” The encounter is the episode’s closing reveal, not a resolution of his estrangement from the Swans.

What the series dramatizes—and what the historical record supports

Feud: Capote vs. The Swans is primarily based on Laurence Leamer’s 2021 book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era, according to TIME. Its historical backdrop includes Capote’s friendships with Babe Paley, Slim Keith, Lee Radziwill, and C.Z. Guest, as well as the 1975 publication of “La Côte Basque 1965,” an excerpt from his unfinished Answered Prayers.

The publication and its broad social fallout are historical context; the specific dialogue, scene order, private conversations, and psychological motives described above belong to the series’ dramatization unless a source is identified for them. The distinction matters especially for the episode’s intimate scenes: a dramatic portrayal is not, by itself, proof that a conversation happened as shown.
