El reto de Fernando Colunga en Amanecer fue comprender cómo la infancia de Leonel Carranza —marcada por el maltrato, el miedo y un entorno rígido— moldeó al hombre adulto. El actor contó que trabajó durante seis o siete meses con los escritores y el productor Juan Osorio en la historia y el personaje antes de comenzar a grabar.
El reto: encontrar al niño detrás del adulto
Colunga explicó que no quería abordar a Leonel únicamente desde su conducta adulta. Para construirlo, buscó entender a fondo la vida de un niño maltratado que vive con miedo y bajo una autoridad inflexible, y cómo esa experiencia condiciona su intento de convertirse en un hombre distinto.
En la entrevista publicada por People en Español el 3 de julio de 2025, el actor describió el desafío así: «[Ha sido un reto] poder entender al fondo la vida de un niño maltratado, de un niño que vive con miedo, de un niño que vive siempre con una sombra y con una mano tan rígida para luego tratar de convertirse en un hombre diferente y que la vida no se lo permita».
Cómo preparó a Leonel antes del rodaje
La preparación comenzó antes de filmar. Colunga dijo que colaboró con los escritores y con Osorio en la historia durante seis o siete meses. Ese trabajo previo le permitió explorar la trayectoria del personaje y el vínculo entre lo que vivió de niño y la persona que llega a ser.

Un melodrama clásico con personajes que cambian
Colunga definió Amanecer como «un melodrama clásico contado de una manera actual». Según su descripción, los personajes no siguen una sola línea fija: evolucionan en función de lo que les sucede a lo largo de la historia. En el caso de Leonel, esa idea se conecta con el esfuerzo por mostrar cómo el pasado influye en su conducta y en sus posibilidades de cambiar.
