New Atlas’s 2023 review found its test guitar versatile and enjoyable to play, though not flawless in finish and edge work. The appeal is clear for players seeking a classic-feeling Strat; whether its 7.25-inch-radius fingerboard and U-shaped neck suit you is best decided in person.
What the Vintera II ’70s Stratocaster is
Fender’s Vintera II ’70s Stratocaster is a vintage-specification Stratocaster with an alder body, gloss polyester finish, maple neck, and three vintage-style ’70s single-coil pickups in an SSS layout. Fender’s EU product page lists both maple and slab rosewood fingerboard variants. Its listed specifications include a 25.5-inch scale, synthetic bone nut, bullet-style truss rod, and a three-bolt ’F’-stamped neck plate with Micro-Tilt.
The setup is conventional Strat in broad outline, but the details matter: the instrument uses a ’70s U neck, 7.25-inch fingerboard radius, and 21 vintage-tall frets. Those dimensions give it a more vintage-oriented feel than many modern, flatter-radius necks. The five-position blade switch selects the pickup combinations, with a master volume and separate tone controls for the neck/middle and bridge pickups. That bridge-specific tone control lets players tame the bridge pickup without changing the neck and middle tone settings. Fender’s EU product page lists these features and hardware.
The bridge is a six-saddle vintage-style synchronized tremolo with bent steel saddles. Fender lists vintage ’F’-stamped tuners and includes a deluxe gig bag and adjustment wrenches. The listed factory strings are Fender USA 250L nickel-plated steel, .009–.042 gauge; that is a specification, not an upgrade recommendation.

How it played and sounded in the 2023 review
New Atlas reviewer Loz Blain published his review on September 20, 2023, after using a Surf Green sample for about a week. He praised that guitar’s setup, playability, sustain, finish, and range of Strat tones. He heard bright, dynamic pickups: light playing brought out bell-like sounds, while a harder attack produced a more forceful response. He also found the separate bridge tone control useful. These are observations about one reviewed instrument, not measured performance claims or a guarantee that every example will sound or arrive in the same condition.
Blain described the pickups as bright and shimmery, with more output and “beef” than those in the 1957 American Vintage II he referenced. That is his subjective comparison of the reviewed sample; the article supplies no measured pickup-output figures. In his 2023 review, he called the guitar “a killer guitar, with vintage feel and panache and great big dollops of tone,” and framed its price as accessible to players stepping up to a pro-level instrument. Fit, finish, and the feel to check for yourself
The vintage-oriented neck geometry is the most important reason to try this model before buying if possible. A 7.25-inch radius and U-shaped neck will feel different from flatter and slimmer modern profiles; preferences vary, particularly for players accustomed to low-action bending or a flatter fingerboard. The 21 vintage-tall frets are another part of that feel, rather than an interchangeable detail.
On his specific sample, Blain noted slight dimples in the fretboard finish, a small neck-pocket overhang, and nut and fret edges that were not perfectly smooth. These were minor imperfections in that one guitar, not evidence that all Vintera II examples share them. A hands-on check should include neck comfort, fret and nut edges, finish, action, and tremolo feel.

- One Squier Debut Series Stratocaster electric guitar – a perfect beginner guitar
- Designed for beginners, the Squier Debut Series Fender Stratocaster includes a super comfortable "c"-shaped neck, laurel fingerboard and thin, lightweight body for more comfort and playability.
Blain said the guitar stayed in tune reasonably well with moderate tremolo use, while qualifying that observation against heavy use of the arm. His experience does not establish tuning stability under aggressive tremolo use. If frequent deep tremolo work is central to your playing, evaluate the specific guitar and setup against that use rather than relying on the review’s moderate-use observation.

Fender’s 2023 launch announcement listed launch prices of US$1,149, £1,049, €1,199, AU$1,899, and ¥159,500. These are historical launch figures, not a current price comparison across markets. New Atlas also reported US$1,149 and AU$1,899 at launch. In the same 2023 review, Blain characterized the instrument as Mexico-made and as costing less than half the American Vintage II series; that ratio is a dated comparison and should not be treated as a current one. Fender’s 2023 Vintera II announcement gives its launch framing.

The Vintera II ’70s Strat makes the most sense for players who want a traditional Strat pickup arrangement and hardware with a vintage-leaning neck feel, plus separate control over the bridge pickup’s tone. The reviewed sample’s tonal range and playability will appeal to players who value responsive single-coil sounds, but the neck profile and radius are personal fit decisions—not features that make the guitar universally comfortable.

When comparing it with another Strat-style guitar, focus on neck profile and radius, fret dimensions, pickup voicing and switching, tremolo design, included case or bag, and the actual setup and price available in your region. One review can describe a specific guitar; it cannot substitute for comparing the instruments you can actually try.
