Skin Deep is Australian surfer and artist Felicity Palmateer’s four-minute nude-surfing art film. She described it as a way to bring surfing and art together and express her connection with the ocean. The film was previewed in 2018 and released in December 2020.
What is Skin Deep about?
Palmateer framed Skin Deep as an art project, not a product advertisement. In a 2018 interview with The Inertia, she said she wanted to combine her passions for surfing and art and show her connection with the ocean. In 2020, she reiterated to The Inertia, “It is an art project and I am an artist.”

The result is a short film centered on Palmateer surfing nude in the ocean. Its subject is less a display of equipment or surfing instruction than an artistic expression of her relationship with the water.
When was it made and released?
Contemporary reporting places the project’s origins around 2015 and describes filming over several years. The film was previewed in 2018: PerthNow reported on a 15-second teaser and said the full film was expected soon. That was an expectation at the time, not its eventual release date. The full film was reported released in December 2020.

Palmateer told The Inertia that an earlier release had been delayed after a sponsor objected to the content. She did not name the sponsor in that interview, so the company should not be inferred.
Where was Skin Deep filmed?
Reports describe filming in Hawaii, Fiji, and Australia. Antena 3’s December 2020 coverage lists Fiji, Hawaii, Western Australia, and northern New South Wales, and describes three years of recording. These are reported locations, not necessarily a complete itinerary.

What song is in the film?
Palmateer said she had envisioned the four-minute film to the length of RÜFÜS’s track “No Place,” which she described as a particularly meaningful fit. Her account makes the track the clearest musical point of connection to the project. It does not establish a particular album edition or vinyl release containing the song.
Who made the project?
Palmateer’s 2018 interview names a five-person core team: Palmateer, JJ Jenkins, Dwayne Fetch, Rick Rifici, and Chris White. Jenkins was then her partner and manager; Fetch was producer and cinematographer; Rifici handled water cinematography; and White was a photographer and former professional bodyboarder.
