Palmateer said sharing her family’s story could help people affected by dementia feel less alone and encourage families to recognise signs and seek support.
Who is Flick Palmateer?
Palmateer is an Australian professional big-wave surfer who also competed on Australian Survivor. Dementia Australia announced her appointment as an ambassador on 1 March 2023. The organisation’s current ambassador profile continues to list her and says she took on the role in honour of her mother.
What happened to her mother?
Pauline Palmateer was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia at 46 and died at 52, after six years of decline, according to Dementia Australia’s 1 March 2023 announcement. The announcement describes frontotemporal dementia as resulting from progressive damage to the brain’s frontal and/or temporal lobes, affecting language, behaviour and mobility.
Pauline died during the final week Flick was competing on Australian Survivor in 2021. Dementia Australia’s profile says Palmateer chose to remain on the show with her family’s support, in part so she could use the attention around the program to raise awareness.

Why did Palmateer become an ambassador?
Palmateer described the appointment as an ongoing tribute to her mother and a chance to raise awareness that dementia can affect people in their 40s and 50s. “I am proudly committed to being an Ambassador as an ongoing tribute to my Mum especially as few people my age are aware that it can happen to someone in their 40s or 50s,” she said in Dementia Australia’s announcement.
She also said, “Sharing my story will help anyone impacted by dementia feel a little less alone and help families to recognise the signs of dementia and seek support.” The role connects her public profile with a message about younger-onset dementia while keeping the focus on the experiences of people living with the condition and their families.

Her ambassador roles
Palmateer’s Dementia Australia appointment began in 2023. Separately, in 2025, UNSW Sydney’s Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing listed her as an ambassador for its Wipeout Dementia initiative. That is a distinct role, not the organisation that announced her Dementia Australia appointment.
In its 2023 announcement, Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM welcomed Palmateer’s commitment to people of all ages living with all forms of dementia, as well as their families and carers.
