Spoilers for FBI Season 7, Episode 17, “Lineage.” The episode gives Isobel a persuasive reason to consider leaving the FBI, then asks its tour-bus shooting case to carry equal dramatic weight. Its biggest weakness is that the case’s late turn feels too easy to anticipate, blunting the impact of an hour that should belong to Isobel.
What happens in “Lineage”?
“Lineage” is Season 7, Episode 17 of FBI, listed by CBS as airing April 8, 2025. The case begins when a famous rapper and two teenage fans are shot on the rapper’s tour bus. The investigation initially appears tied to a feud between two rappers, but the team discovers a more complicated story. CBS’s episode listing frames that case alongside a major personal milestone for Isobel.

The episode also introduces Isobel’s husband, Philip, played by Tom Cavanagh. Their scenes bring her career decision into the home rather than treating it as a routine workplace dilemma.
Does Isobel retire?
No. Isobel reaches her 20th year with the FBI and considers retirement because she can leave with full benefits. In an interview published on April 8, 2025, Alana De La Garza confirmed that Isobel ultimately decides she is not finished with the work. TV Insider’s interview with De La Garza also identifies Philip as Isobel’s husband.

That possibility gives the hour a clear emotional question: after two decades, does Isobel still want the job, or is it time to choose a life beyond it? The milestone makes the question credible, and Philip’s presence gives Isobel someone with whom to consider it. Her decision to stay is a character resolution, not an announcement that De La Garza is leaving the series.
The flaw: the case’s turn is too predictable
The weakness is not that “Lineage” includes a twist; it is that the turn does not land with enough surprise to deepen the episode. The story’s initial rapper-feud explanation gives the investigation a surface mystery, but the shift toward a wider criminal story needs stronger suspense or a more revealing connection to Isobel’s dilemma. Instead, the case and the career question often feel like parallel tracks rather than parts of one drama.

Rotten Tomatoes lists a 6/10 review by CBR critic Brittany Frederick, published April 11, 2025, and summarizes its criticism this way: “The script has more than its fair share of struggles. culminating in a plot twist that every viewer will see coming.” That is a broad criticism of the script, not a scene-by-scene explanation of the flaw. The episode’s most defensible shortcoming is the predictability of its case turn: when the audience can get ahead of the reveal, the procedural loses momentum and Isobel’s milestone has to do more of the emotional work on its own. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page lists the review and a Paramount+ subscription viewing option; availability may vary by country and date.
Why the two storylines do not fully reinforce each other
Isobel’s retirement question has genuine stakes because the 20-year threshold makes departure a practical option, not a vague expression of burnout. Her choice to stay gives the personal thread a firm endpoint. The case, by contrast, does not provide the same sense of closure. CinemaBlend’s April 9, 2025 recap reports that target Jack Grippo dies before he can be brought through the justice system, while his daughter Billie takes a position of power in a criminal enterprise. The recap reads that outcome as a continuing pursuit rather than a completed case. CinemaBlend’s recap supplies those case details.
An unresolved criminal thread can be an effective way to carry a series forward, but here it leaves the procedural story with less payoff than Isobel’s personal one. The case ends by opening another door, while Isobel’s choice closes hers. That contrast could have made her decision resonate more deeply if the investigation had tested her convictions or mirrored the costs of staying. Without that stronger link, the case functions mainly as the episode’s plot engine, while Isobel’s scenes provide its emotional center.

“Lineage” is an Isobel-centered episode in its central question and final choice, but the procedural plot does not rise to match that focus. The 20-year milestone and her decision to remain give the hour a meaningful character outcome; a predictable case turn and an open-ended criminal resolution make the surrounding story less satisfying. Viewers following Isobel’s arc will find the episode worthwhile, even if its mystery is easier to read than it should be.
