She questioned that expectation, saying she could not imagine Claire not working, then asked John, “What are women for?” The clip cuts off before he gives the answer he says he has.
What John meant by a “traditional” family
In the People exclusive preview syndicated by AOL, John says, “I would want a traditional family. That can be controversial these days.” When Claire’s mother asks what he means, he explains: “I’d like to work, and I’d like for my wife to be home with the children.”

That is the specific family arrangement John describes in this conversation: he would earn a living outside the home, while his wife cared for their children. The preview does not establish how he would divide other household responsibilities or whether he meant this as a firm requirement for a partner.
What Claire’s mother asked him
Claire’s mother calls his answer “interesting.” In a confessional, she says, “I am surprised just because I can’t imagine her not working,” adding that Claire had never told her she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom.

She then asks John, “What are girls for?” He pauses and responds, “Girls or women?” After she clarifies, “Women. What are women for?”, John says, “I have an answer. I’m just trying to word it correctly.” The preview ends there; it does not show his considered answer.
How the conversation fits the finale
The exchange appeared in a preview for the two-hour season 3 finale, which aired May 22, 2025. The scene captures a disagreement about work and caregiving expectations, but it is an edited excerpt and should not be taken as a complete account of either person’s views.

John ultimately chose Claire over Lily in the finale, according to Us Weekly’s finale coverage. John later said he had been “insanely nervous” about meeting Claire’s mother.

In a post-finale interview published May 22, 2025, John said he and Claire sometimes revisited his preference for a traditional family, but had not had one major conversation framed as an ultimatum. He credited communication with helping them discuss differences. Claire said their different upbringings had not made it difficult to understand one another and that they learned about each other through conversation, as reported by TV Insider.

That interview described their relationship at the time, not their later status. Later in 2025, Us Weekly reported that John and Claire had split after season 3, referring to private challenges. That report does not establish further details about the reasons for the breakup.
