Unofficial set video reported on August 28, 2024, offered a glimpse of Ben Grimm, the Thing, in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It showed a rocky, mask-like character design, but did not establish that actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach was wearing it—or that the finished film relied on a practical suit.
What appeared in the leaked set video?
On August 28, 2024, an X account called Cosmic Media shared video from the film’s set. SuperHeroHype identified the figure as Moss-Bachrach’s Ben Grimm, while contemporary coverage described a visible Thing face with a look reminiscent of the character’s classic comic-book design. BGR also reported on set photos the following day.
These were unofficial glimpses during production, not an approved look at the finished movie. The footage offered an impression of the character’s appearance on set; it could not confirm how that image would look after visual-effects work.
Was Ebon Moss-Bachrach under the mask?
The reports do not confirm who was wearing the visible mask. BGR explicitly noted that the person could have been a stand-in, so the clip is not proof that Moss-Bachrach himself was in costume. The film cast Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, but identifying the character in a clip is different from identifying the person inside the costume.

Does the costume prove the film used practical effects?
No. A practical-looking figure on a set does not show how the final character was made. JoBlo reported that Moss-Bachrach had previously said the role would use motion capture. Its suggestion that the visible figure might be a stand-in for reference or visual-effects work was speculation, not a confirmed explanation.
There are several possibilities consistent with the available reporting: the footage may show a practical-looking costume, a stand-in, or an element used alongside motion capture and digital effects. Den of Geek likewise noted uncertainty about CGI augmentation. None of these reports establishes the final effects method or finished screen design.

What Moss-Bachrach said about earlier Thing suits
JoBlo attributed these comments to Moss-Bachrach, discussing the suit worn by Michael Chiklis in an earlier Fantastic Four film: “Michael Chiklis wore a suit that apparently was really uncomfortable, and it’s kind of… we’re past that,” he said on Jimmy Kimmel Live. JoBlo also quoted him saying, “It’s a little kind of cosplay, kind of amateur that kind of stuff now with the technology we have.” The report did not specify the interview date.
