Fantasian is a visually distinctive, turn-based Japanese role-playing game from Hironobu Sakaguchi’s Mistwalker, first released through Apple Arcade in 2021. In its September 8, 2021 review, iMore praised its handcrafted-looking environments, Nobuo Uematsu’s music and strategic combat, but found its story familiar to longtime fans of classic Final Fantasy. That balance makes it an appealing homage for some players—and a less compelling choice for anyone hoping for a radical narrative departure.
What makes Fantasian look different?
Many of the game’s environments began as handmade physical dioramas. Apple’s 2021 App Store Awards feature reports that the team created nearly 160 dioramas over three years, then photographed and 3D-scanned them for use in the game. The character models, by contrast, are rendered separately in anime-inspired CG.

The result is a visual contrast between detailed, tangible-looking scenery and stylized characters. Sakaguchi described the appeal of that process to Apple: “Things made by human hands have a soul. The details of our dioramas push the limits of what you can do with the human hand.” Apple also reported that the game includes 58 original songs. Apple’s 2021 App Store Awards feature named Fantasian its Apple Arcade Game of the Year.
How does the combat work?
Combat is turn-based, with a positioning and aiming twist: many skills can be directed along straight or curved trajectories, or shaped to cover an area. Xbox Wire’s overview describes how turn order and attack paths make it possible to plan strikes against groups rather than simply selecting a target.

The Dimengeon system
Random encounters can be stored in the Dimengeon rather than interrupting exploration one by one. iMore reported that it can hold up to 30 encounters. When you choose to fight, the accumulated enemies arrive together, so you trade frequent interruptions for a larger battle that may require more preparation. Apple describes the system as a way to keep moving through the world before taking on a bundled fight; Xbox Wire notes that filling the machine triggers the stored encounter. Apple and Xbox Wire explain the system’s intent and tactical trade-off.
iMore praised the game’s strategic encounters and smooth gameplay flow. The review also found the touchscreen controls intuitive and said controller support was available, while the reviewer felt a controller made little difference. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that touch or controller play will suit every device or player.

Is the story too familiar?
That depends on what you want from a classic-style RPG. iMore’s central criticism was that the story draws on familiar elements of Sakaguchi’s previous work, especially for players who have spent decades with early Final Fantasy games. The review did not treat that familiarity as a flaw for everyone: players looking for a polished return to established JRPG conventions may find it reassuring, while those seeking a fresh narrative direction may be disappointed.
For a fair comparison with another old-school RPG, consider the originality of its story and characters, how much depth its combat offers, whether the encounter pacing works for you, and how much you value its visual craft and music. Platform and controls matter too: the original was designed for Apple Arcade, while a later expanded release is available on other systems. The available review evidence supports those comparison points, not a numerical ranking against another game.

What did the 2021 Apple Arcade review establish?
iMore published its review on September 8, 2021, when Fantasian had launched through Apple Arcade. It described the game as a single-player JRPG and listed Mistwalker as developer and publisher. Its page also listed iOS 13.0 or later, a 4.6 GB game size and an estimated 50-hour play time. Those are details from the launch-era review, not verified current device requirements or a current estimate for every player.
The review’s subscription context is historical, too: Apple Arcade was the launch access route. The current catalog and subscription terms can vary by region and date, so check Apple’s current information before subscribing specifically to play the original release.

How is Fantasian Neo Dimension different?
Fantasian Neo Dimension is a later, expanded release—not the 2021 Apple Arcade version under a new name. It launched on December 5, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam. Producer Hironobu Sakaguchi called it a “director’s cut” in a PlayStation Blog interview; that description does not establish that the original story was rewritten.
The later edition adds English and Japanese voice acting and another difficulty option. Its 4K support is platform-specific: Sakaguchi discussed 4K presentation of the diorama imagery on PS5, while Xbox Wire notes 4K support on Xbox Series X. These features should not be assumed to apply to every platform or to the original Apple Arcade release. Read the PlayStation Blog interview and Xbox Wire’s feature for the edition-specific details.
