Warner Bros.’ official Japanese film page identifies “SUPERPOWER (I),” sung by Fantasia Barrino, as one of the film’s new songs, alongside “Keep It Movin’.” The film combines songs from the Broadway musical with newly written songs.
Why the video shows Fantasia with her younger self
The video imagines Fantasia singing alongside a younger version of herself. The younger figure wears the red dress associated with Fantasia’s 2004 American Idol performance of “Summertime,” connecting the video’s visual idea to an earlier point in her career.

How Fantasia connects the song to Celie and her own life
Fantasia said the song speaks both to The Color Purple and to her personal experience. She also said she related profoundly to Celie, the character she plays in the film. As she put it, “I cried the whole second verse. I said to The-Dream, ‘It’s almost like you met me before.’”
The-Dream, whose full name is Terius “The-Dream” Gesteelde-Diamant, wrote and produced the song. Recalling his explanation of its inspiration, Fantasia said he told her, “I followed you and I believe that you had superpowers that you didn’t see back then.”
