Keaton often at odds with his liberal parents. The sitcom made a family ensemble of Michael J. Fox, Meredith Baxter, Michael Gross, Justine Bateman, Tina Yothers and Brian Bonsall. Their later careers took different paths; the most recent dated update in the sources below is an October 2025 report about Fox.
Michael J. Fox (Alex P. Keaton)
Fox became the show’s breakout young star as Alex, the ambitious, conservative-minded son of Elyse and Steven. After Family Ties, he built a film and television career that included the Back to the Future films. Parade reported in October 2024 that he had retired from acting in 2020 as Parkinson’s disease progressed. Parade’s cast retrospective recounts that career and retirement.
In October 2025, the Associated Press reported that Fox would guest-star in season three of Shrinking, five years after his retirement from acting, and covered his Parkinson’s advocacy and family life. That is a dated report about a planned appearance, not confirmation of his work status in October 2026. The Associated Press report is the latest dated update here for Fox.
Meredith Baxter (Elyse Keaton)
Baxter played Elyse, an architect and the liberal-minded mother of the Keaton children. Parade’s October 2024 overview recounts selected later work, but the available reporting does not establish a current project or a verified October 2026 update for her. The retrospective supports the career-history context, not a claim about what she is doing now.

Michael Gross (Steven Keaton)
Gross played Steven, Elyse’s husband and Alex’s frequent ideological counterpoint. Beyond the sitcom, one of his best-known continuing roles was Burt Gummer in the Tremors franchise. Parade also lists a 2024 appearance in Heather Graham’s Chosen Family; that credit is a record of work in 2024, not evidence of a current project. Parade’s overview recaps those credits.
Justine Bateman (Mallory Keaton)
Bateman played Mallory, Alex’s older sister. Parade’s October 2024 cast article covers parts of her career after the sitcom, but the source set does not provide a newer, directly verified account of her filmmaking, writing or other activity in 2026. The article’s career recap is useful historical context rather than a current-status check.

Parade’s October 2024 overview provides the dated retrospective account.
Brian Bonsall (Andrew “Andy” Keaton)
Bonsall joined the cast as Andy, the youngest Keaton child. Parade’s cast overview includes him, but the sources available here do not establish a current update on his music, personal life or professional work. The October 2024 retrospective is the cited source for his place in the show and its cast history.

What the cast’s later careers show
The six performers shared a hit sitcom, but the available dated accounts are uneven: Fox has an Associated Press update from October 2025, while the principal cast overview dates to October 2024. Those sources support selected career milestones, not a same-date comparison of everyone’s present-day work. For historical context, the Television Academy Foundation maintains retrospective interviews with Fox and creator Gary David Goldberg about the show’s premise, casting, characters, working relationships and ending. Its archive describes interview segments; the descriptions are not transcripts or verified quotations. Explore the Television Academy Foundation’s Family Ties archive.
