For a family movie night built around comic surprises, start with a body swap, a mischievous reversal or a slapstick trap—not the horror film titled April Fool’s Day. The examples below are a short, verified selection, not a confirmed list of 25: choose the exact version, check its official rating, and decide whether its humor suits your household.
Family movies with a mistaken-identity twist
Freaky Friday (2003)
Disney describes this version as a PG comedy, family and fantasy film. A mother and daughter exchange bodies, giving the story its comic change of perspective and making it a natural pick for a movie night about mix-ups. Check Disney’s official film page for the 2003 version and its rating.

Freaky Friday (1976)
The earlier adaptation also follows a mother and daughter who exchange bodies. Disney lists this version as G and classifies it as comedy, family and fantasy. It is a separate film from the 2003 release, so check the year when choosing which one to watch. Disney’s film listing covers the 2003 version; the 1976 version is identified separately in Disney’s catalog.
Family movies built around a mischievous reversal
Matilda (1996)
Sony describes Matilda as a PG family comedy about a clever child who uses her abilities to get even with adults. That reversal can suit a night of playful mischief, though the premise and humor may not work for every child. Sony lists the film on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD; those formats are not a statement of current local stock. See Sony’s official Matilda page for its rating, genre and listed formats.

Family movies with slapstick traps and comic reversals
Home Alone (1990)
20th Century Studios classifies Home Alone as a PG comedy/family film. Its story follows a child protecting his home from burglars, with traps and physical comedy supplying the reversals. It is not specifically about April Fools’ Day, but its prank-like slapstick makes it a possible fit for a funny-movie theme. The studio lists Blu-ray, DVD and digital availability; that listing does not establish current streaming access or local availability. Check the official Home Alone page for the film details.

The title may suggest the 1986 film April Fool’s Day, but Paramount identifies that movie as R-rated horror/drama, with a prank setup that turns deadly. It is not a family alternative on the evidence available here. See Paramount’s official page for its rating and genre.

How to choose a movie for your household
- Confirm the exact release. The two Freaky Friday films have different years and ratings.
- Use the rating as a starting point, not a guarantee. A G or PG rating and a distributor’s family label do not mean every child will enjoy or tolerate the same material.
- Match the kind of joke to the audience. A body swap, a child getting even with adults, and slapstick traps are different kinds of comic surprise.
- Check availability where you watch. Studio pages may list formats, but they do not establish current streaming access, stock or availability in every region.
