The family kept the arrangements private, and reports do not provide a complete guest list or account of the private proceedings.
How the farewells unfolded
| Gathering | Date and place | What was reported |
|---|---|---|
| Private memorial | January 26, 2008; Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary, Los Angeles | Restricted to family and close friends. Michelle Williams and Naomi Watts were among those reported in attendance. |
| Perth memorial | February 9, 2008; Penrhos College, Perth | A larger gathering for family, friends and other mourners. Cate Blanchett delivered a eulogy, and Ledger’s father, Kim, thanked fans for their support. |
| Private cremation and later gathering | After the Perth memorial; Perth and Cottesloe Beach | The cremation was private, with about 10 immediate family members reported present. Friends and family later gathered at a restaurant by Cottesloe Beach; some went into the surf. |
RTÉ’s January 26, 2008 report described the Los Angeles event as a private memorial for family and close friends. It named Williams and Watts among attendees, but did not present a full guest list.
The Perth memorial and differing attendance estimates
The February 9 memorial at Penrhos College brought together a wider circle of mourners. Cate Blanchett gave a eulogy, and Kim Ledger thanked fans for their support. Contemporary reports differ on how many people attended: ABC Australia estimated about 500 mourners, while RTÉ reported more than 600 family members, friends and fans. These are attributed estimates, not a confirmed count.
The private cremation and Cottesloe Beach gathering
After the memorial, Ledger was cremated in a private service. ABC Australia reported that about 10 immediate family members attended. That private service was distinct from the larger Perth memorial: before it, Ledger’s father had emphasized the family’s wish for a very private funeral, as quoted by the Associated Press in CityNews Toronto’s report.

Michelle Williams’s request for privacy
In a public statement published shortly after Ledger’s death, Michelle Williams asked people to respect the family’s grief: “Please respect our need to grieve privately. My heart is broken.” She also spoke about their daughter Matilda’s connection to her father: “His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still.” CBS News, reporting the statement, published the remarks in 2008.
