The three names Amazon puts at the top of the Fallout series are Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Aaron Moten. Purnell plays Lucy MacLean, Goggins plays the Ghoul (Cooper Howard), and Moten plays Maximus. Kyle MacLachlan, who plays Hank the Overseer, is the other principal character Amazon highlights, and a wider ensemble fills out the rest of the announced cast.
The lead stars and their characters
Amazon’s 2023 cast announcement describes the series as starring Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets), Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight), and Aaron Moten (Emancipation). Amazon’s 2024 cast-and-creators feature then ties each lead to a character. The table below combines both sources.
| Actor | Character in the series | Prior credit named by Amazon | Where the character link comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ella Purnell | Lucy MacLean | Yellowjackets | Amazon cast-and-creators feature (2024) |
| Walton Goggins | The Ghoul / Cooper Howard | The Hateful Eight | Amazon cast-and-creators feature (2024) |
| Aaron Moten | Maximus | Emancipation | Amazon cast-and-creators feature (2024) |
| Kyle MacLachlan | Hank the Overseer | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Amazon cast-and-creators feature (2024) |
Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean
Purnell is the series’ lead. Lucy MacLean is a vault resident who is pushed out into a world she has only known from the stories told inside her shelter. Amazon’s announcement frames the premise around exactly this kind of forced return.
Walton Goggins as the Ghoul (Cooper Howard)
Goggins plays the Ghoul, the character identified in Amazon’s feature as Cooper Howard. The name matters for readers who know the games: the character is a figure from the pre-war world who now lives in the irradiated surface landscape rather than inside a shelter.

Aaron Moten as Maximus
Moten plays Maximus. Amazon names him among the three stars in its announcement, which places him alongside Purnell and Goggins rather than in the supporting ensemble.
Kyle MacLachlan as Hank the Overseer
MacLachlan’s role is the one most clearly tied to the vault system. Hank the Overseer is listed by Amazon among the principal character connections, though Amazon’s 2024 feature is the only source here that gives the role, and it does not describe the character’s arc.

What the show is based on
Fallout is an adaptation of the Fallout video game franchise. Prime Video’s listing describes the story as set 200 years after the apocalypse, when residents of luxury fallout shelters encounter the world above. Amazon’s announcement adds that vault residents are forced to return to an irradiated world above their shelters. For a reader who knows the games, the setting is the same; the TV series follows new characters through that landscape rather than retelling a single game’s plot.
