Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 1, “The Innovator.” Vault 24 was cut from the released version of Fallout: New Vegas, according to game-file reporting; the series premiere gives the vault a new on-screen story. The episode also nods to New Vegas through Novac, Dinky the Dinosaur and “Big Iron,” while its water-chip crisis reaches back to the original Fallout.
What is Fallout Season 2, Episode 1?
The premiere is titled “The Innovator.” Prime Video’s episode listing gives it a runtime of 1 hour 2 minutes and currently displays December 15, 2025: Prime Video’s Season 2 listing. There is a date discrepancy worth noting: contemporaneous coverage from Sideshow reported that the release had moved from Wednesday, December 17, to Tuesday, December 16 (Sideshow’s recap). The listing’s displayed date and the date reported at the time should not be treated as the same record.
The episode intercuts Lucy and the Ghoul’s journey through the Mojave with a pre-war storyline involving Mr. House and control technology. Meanwhile, Vault 33’s residents face a failing water chip. Those threads set up references to different parts of the games, rather than making every nod specifically a New Vegas Easter egg.
Was Vault 24 really cut from Fallout: New Vegas?
Reporting by Nerdist says players found a Vault 24 jumpsuit in New Vegas’s game code, although the vault was not accessible in the released game. PC Gamer likewise describes Vault 24 as a location present in the files but cut from the final release. These are games-journalism accounts of the game files, not an Obsidian development record explaining the decision.

In “The Innovator,” Lucy and the Ghoul investigate Vault 24, and the episode depicts it as a Vault-Tec brainwashing experiment. That television storyline is distinct from the limited game-file evidence: the reporting supports a cut-content connection, but it does not establish that the show’s experiment or other plot details were part of the original game. No official reason for the vault’s removal is established by the cited coverage.
Which New Vegas references appear in “The Innovator”?
Novac and Dinky the Dinosaur
The Mojave journey includes Novac and its dinosaur landmark, Dinky. GameSpot notes that Lucy uses Dinky as a sniper perch, echoing companion Boone’s association with the landmark in New Vegas. Nerdist also identifies Novac, Dinky and the Dinobite Gift Shop as game-world callbacks. The scene works both as recognizable location imagery and as a character-specific nod to Boone.

“Big Iron”
The shootout features Marty Robbins’s “Big Iron.” The song dates to 1959; its connection to New Vegas comes later, through its place on the game’s soundtrack. GameSpot identifies the track as a game reference and notes how it accompanies the Ghoul’s shootout. The episode is invoking both the real-world song and its established association with the game.
Mr. House and RobCo
The pre-war plot brings in Mr. House and a mind-control chip, linking the episode’s technology story to the broader House and RobCo corner of the franchise. Sideshow’s recap says House is field-testing the device and identifies Justin Theroux as House, with Rafi Silver appearing as a media double; Nerdist also discusses the portrayal and double. A line Sideshow attributes to House as the flashback ends is, “The world might end, but progress marches on.”

Which references come from other Fallout games?
The water-purification chip
Vault 33’s water chip is failing, and the residents’ problem recalls the replacement-chip premise of the 1997 original Fallout. GameSpot makes that connection. It is a franchise-wide callback, not a New Vegas-specific reference.
Whac-A-Commie
Nerdist identifies the pre-war squirrel arcade game as a reference to Whac-A-Commie, introduced in Fallout 4: Nuka-World. Like the water chip, it points beyond New Vegas to another part of the series.
