Fallout was not shot in one city. Season 1 drew on production in and around New York City, on desert terrain near Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats, and in Namibia, where the abandoned Kolmanskop diamond-mining site supplied imagery for the Wasteland. Later production moved toward California. Amazon says filming for Season 3 began in Los Angeles, and the California Film Commission lists Fallout 2+ as a relocating television series.
Season 1: three production regions
The most detailed public account of Season 1 locations comes from a 2024 Los Angeles Times report. It describes the show’s visual geography as a mix of New York-area production, landscapes near the Bonneville Salt Flats, and Namibia’s desert-meets-the-sea terrain. The sources reviewed do not name individual New York City streets, studios or stages, so treat the New York region as a broad production footprint rather than a list of addresses.
Around New York City
The Times places a portion of Season 1 production in and around New York City. Because the reporting does not break this down by episode or set, it is not possible to say which scenes were shot there.
Near the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah
The Wasteland’s flat, white, empty horizons are associated in the reporting with the area near Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. As with New York, the sources do not map specific scenes to specific spots within that region.

Namibia and Kolmanskop
Namibia is the most specific international location named in the Season 1 reporting. The Times cites Kolmanskop, a long-abandoned diamond-mining settlement, as one of the sites that supplied imagery for the heroine’s journey through the Wasteland. Kolmanskop was not the only location used, and the reporting does not establish that every desert exterior was filmed there.
A Santa Monica coastline replica
The same reporting says a replica of the Santa Monica coastline helped inform the show’s Los Angeles setting. That is a design and story reference. It does not establish that the series filmed at the actual Santa Monica Pier or on the real beach.

Season 2: a California desert set
Amazon Sustainability describes a Season 2 set in the California desert. The same page reports a generator-free basecamp pilot used on that set to power production functions such as makeup, wardrobe and catering. The sources do not name the exact desert location.
Season 3: filming in Los Angeles
Amazon’s Season 3 announcement says filming began in Los Angeles. This is the most recent production location the sources establish. Check Amazon’s Season 3 page or the official Prime Video listing for any later changes to where episodes were shot.

What the California Film Commission record shows
The California Film Commission’s official approved-project list identifies Fallout 2+ as a “Relocating TV Series,” names Kilter Films as the production company, and records a $25 million credit allocation dated April 8, 2024. That allocation is an incentive record. It is not a list of sets, stages or filming sites, and it does not say how much of production took place in California.
Filming location is not the same as story setting
The show’s onscreen setting, the Wasteland of a post-nuclear America, is fictional. Its real-world production sites were chosen for their look, and in several cases their terrain was reshaped or supplemented by set construction. Keep these two things separate when you describe a scene. A landscape can represent a place that does not exist, and a real location can stand in for somewhere else entirely.

Can you visit the filming locations?
The sources establish production geography. They do not establish public access. Before planning a trip, confirm the following for any site:
- Who owns or manages the land or building, and whether it is open to the public.
- Whether the site is a protected heritage area, private land or an active industrial or mining zone. Kolmanskop, for example, is a historic site whose current visitor rules are not established by the sources reviewed.
- Whether local authorities require permits for filming, photography or drone use.
- Current opening hours, entry rules and safety conditions, which may change without notice.

Who shot the show
Kodak’s interview identifies Stuart Dryburgh as the cinematographer. He describes his reaction to the material: “I adored the script, watched play-throughs of the video game, and could readily see this was an insanely imaginative story.” The interview is a statement about the creative approach, not a record of where any scene was shot.

Where the story came from
Amazon’s official photo page quotes Todd Howard on the origins of the series. He says: “Fallout 4 was where I wanted to show the past, and I loved the game’s opening. But after that, I was like, ‘We didn’t get to do enough of it.'” This explains the link to the games, and it does not add to the location record.
Carbon and fuel figures
Amazon Sustainability gives an industry average of about 105.4 metric tons of carbon emissions for producing one episode of an hour-long scripted drama. That is a general estimate for the category, not a measured total for Fallout. The same page says fuel accounts for 34% to 65% of emissions across feature and series productions. The sources reviewed do not show a Fallout-specific breakdown.
Audience claim
Amazon’s Season 3 announcement says the first two seasons have drawn more than 100 million worldwide viewers. That is Amazon’s own figure, not an independent audience audit.
Where to look for updates
Production details change as seasons are filmed and released. For the most current information, use Amazon’s official Prime Video and Season 3 pages, the California Film Commission’s approved-project list, and the Los Angeles Times reporting on Season 1 as the baseline account.
