Facebook’s Friends tab is designed to gather content from your friends—posts, Stories, Reels, birthdays and friend requests—without the recommended posts Meta says appear elsewhere. It is a separate destination, not a switch that removes recommendations across Facebook, and Meta has not promised that it shows every friend’s post or sorts them chronologically.
What changed in Facebook’s Friends tab
Meta announced the redesigned Friends tab on March 27, 2025, with an initial rollout in the United States and Canada. The former Friends destination mainly surfaced friend requests and People You May Know; the redesigned tab adds a place to browse friends’ activity. Meta described it as a friends-focused space without recommended content. Meta’s announcement lists:
- Friends’ posts
- Friends’ Stories
- Friends’ Reels
- Birthdays
- Friend requests
The change does not establish that Facebook removed People You May Know from the platform. It describes a change to the Friends destination; friend suggestions remain a separate recommendation feature.
What “no suggested content” does—and does not—mean
Facebook recommendations can include posts, accounts, Pages, groups and other entities a person does not already follow. Meta’s Help Center describes examples such as “Suggested For You” posts, Pages You May Like, People You May Know and Groups You Should Join (Facebook recommendations).

#1 Best Overall
- A more natural connection. Smart Camera adjusts automatically so you can move freely and stay in frame, while Smart Sound ensures you can easily be heard.
- Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
- Designed for the home. With a sleek picture frame design, quick setup and intuitive voice and touchscreen controls, Portal fits easily and seamlessly into your home.
- Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the camera cover.
For the Friends tab, “no suggested content” means the stated design is to show content from Facebook friends rather than recommended posts from accounts or communities you do not follow. Friends’ Reels still fit that description: they come from friends, even though Reels are also used for discovery elsewhere.
It is not a promise that the tab is ad-free, purely post-based, chronological or a complete record of everything friends share. Ads are distinct from suggested posts, and Meta’s announcement does not make a blanket claim about every interface element that might appear around the tab. Nor does it say every post from every friend will be included.
How to find and pin the Friends tab
At launch, Meta said Friends could be opened from the Home Feed navigation bar or Bookmarks. Its documented mobile pinning path was:
Rank #2
- Scale up your greatest conversations. Smart video calling on your TV brings your favorite people, larger-than-life, into your living room.
- Share the room. Perfect for group calls. Meta Portal TV captures your whole room so everyone is in view without jostling for position.
- Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
- A more natural connection. Smart Camera adjusts automatically so you can move freely and stay in frame, while Smart Sound ensures you can be heard clearly.
- Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the camera cover.
- Open Facebook’s Home feed and select your profile picture.
- Choose Settings & Privacy, then Settings.
- Open Tab bar and choose the option to customize it.
- Select Friends and pin it to the bar.
Facebook’s labels and layout can vary by app version, device, account and rollout. If you do not see Tab bar or Friends in the navigation, look in Menu or Bookmarks, or check Feeds and the desktop site. Meta’s December 2025 navigation update also listed Friends among features being surfaced more prominently in the tab bar, without announcing a change to its friends-focused purpose (Meta’s navigation update).

Friends, Home and Feeds are different destinations
Meta’s 2022 explanation distinguished Home, built for discovery, from Feeds, which presents content from selected Facebook categories. The later Friends tab focuses more narrowly on friends.
| Facebook destination | Main purpose | What to expect about recommendations |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Personalized discovery across Facebook | Recommendations may appear. |
| Feeds | Content from selected categories such as friends, Favorites, Pages and groups | Meta said Feeds had no “Suggested For You” posts; ads could still appear. |
| Friends | Friends’ posts, Stories, Reels, birthdays and friend requests | Designed to exclude recommended posts in this destination. |
These distinctions follow Meta’s Home and Feeds announcement and Friends tab announcement. The practical choice is Friends for a narrower friend-focused view, Feeds for followed categories, and Home for broader discovery.

Why the Friends tab may look empty or incomplete
An empty-looking tab does not by itself mean your account is restricted. Possible explanations include little recent activity from friends, a delay loading the page, or a view showing a module such as requests before other content. The tab may also be unavailable or placed differently during a rollout, or the app may be having a temporary problem.
Friends-only describes where content comes from, not a complete archive or a chronological log. A post may be missing because it was deleted, shared to a limited audience, hidden by privacy settings, or otherwise unavailable to you. Remaining Facebook friends also does not guarantee their posts are in your feed: you may have unfollowed or snoozed them.

It does not necessarily collect public posts by strangers that mention a friend, posts from Pages a friend follows, activity in groups you have not joined, or posts a friend has merely liked. Meta’s separate 2026 Reels feature called “friend bubbles” highlights Reels friends have liked or reacted to; that is a discovery feature, not the same thing as the Friends tab (Meta Engineering’s explanation).

- Move and talk freely with Smart Camera: With Smart Camera, you don’t have to worry about being out of frame. Whether you’re moving around the kitchen, prepping dinner or chasing the kids through the living room, Smart Camera adjusts to follow the action. And as more people enter a room, Smart Camera automatically widens to keep everyone in view, so you don’t miss a moment
- Private by design: Facebook doesn't listen to, view or keep the contents of your Portal video calls. Calls on Portal are encrypted, so conversations stay between you and those you're calling. You can also completely disable the camera and microphone with a single tap, or block the camera lens with the camera cover provided
- Connect with friends, even if they don't have Portal: Easily call friends and family on Messenger — calls can be made seamlessly to and from smartphones and tablets. And you can bring up to six other people into a group call
- Alexa built-in: Portal has Alexa built-in, so you can ask a question, set a timer, add items to your shopping list, control your smart home or more. Just ask
- Experience more together: With Portal, story time will never be the same. With music, animation and augmented reality effects, Portal lets you become some of your children’s favorite characters as you read along to well-loved stories. And if friends or family also have Portal, you can listen to your favorite music together as if you were in the same room, without delays or feedback
What to try if Friends is missing or not loading
These are general troubleshooting steps, not fixes Meta guarantees. Try them in order:
- Check that you opened the Friends destination, rather than only the friend-request screen.
- Refresh the page, or reload it on desktop.
- Close Facebook and reopen it.
- Check your device’s official app store for a Facebook update.
- Try another access point, such as Menu, Bookmarks, Feeds or the desktop site.
- Review whether you unfollowed or snoozed friends whose posts you expected to see.
- If it remains broken, use Facebook’s in-app help or report-a-problem option.
Availability can differ by country, platform, app version, account-level rollout and navigation settings. The launch announcement specified an initial rollout in the United States and Canada; it did not promise simultaneous access for every account or device.
Does Friends turn off recommendations everywhere?
No. Friends is a destination-level way to reduce exposure to recommendations while browsing that view, not a platform-wide recommendation switch. Home and other Facebook surfaces may still recommend content, accounts, Pages, groups or events. Meta’s recommendations guidance describes recommendations across those kinds of content.
Best Value
- Feel close, wherever you roam. With the best of Meta Portal smart video calling made portable, you can take the conversation anywhere in your home.
- Designed for calls on the go. A long-lasting battery and integrated handle make it easy to move from room to room.
- Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
- A more natural connection. Smart Camera adjusts automatically so you can move freely and stay in frame, while Smart Sound ensures you can always be heard.
- Great sound anywhere. Listen to music with a speaker that can fill any room. Doubles as a portable Bluetooth speaker around the home.
For broader control, use Friends or Feeds instead of Home, add important people to Favorites, adjust Feed preferences, hide or snooze individual recommendations, or unfollow accounts and Pages you do not want in your feed. Those controls do not change the Friends tab into a guaranteed chronological or exhaustive feed.
Why Facebook brought friends back into focus
Meta framed the redesign as an effort to restore a more familiar, friend-centered experience after Facebook had expanded into areas such as Groups, Video, Marketplace and discovery. That is the company’s stated framing, not evidence of a specific survey result or a single cause for the change (Meta’s announcement).
