Its simple instruction joined a participant’s face with the ordinary objects in their pockets, wallet or bag in one scanner-made image.
The result was not a psychological test. It was an artistic prompt: look at what you carry, place it beside your face, and let viewers decide what—if anything—the combination suggests about you.
What was the “Face Your Pockets” project?
Contemporary reports describe Face Your Pockets as a mass or participatory photo project created by Timur Akhmetov and Yulia Yakushova. Participants arranged part of their face and the contents of their pockets or bag on a scanner, then submitted the resulting image to the project by email.
The method made a private inventory public. A wallet, keys, receipts, medication, electronics or other everyday belongings appeared alongside the person who carried them. The image functioned as a self-portrait without relying on a conventional camera pose.

A June 26, 2007 report said that 130 photographs had been posted at that time. That is a dated snapshot of the gallery, not a final or current total.
How the original images were made
Arrange the face and possessions together
Historical descriptions consistently identify a scanner as the central tool. The participant placed their face and carried objects on the scanner surface so both would be captured in a single composition. Accounts variously mention pockets, a wallet and a handbag or other bag; the project was not limited to one kind of container.
Submit the result
Reports from 2007 describe sending the finished image to an email address for inclusion in the project. Those instructions are historical. The original website, email address, gallery and submission process have not been verified as active today.

Close your eyes: a historical instruction, not a safety rule
A contemporary discussion page reproduces a recommendation that participants keep their eyes closed while scanning. That wording is preserved as period project guidance, not as a modern safety endorsement or a confirmed technical requirement. Anyone recreating the idea should follow the operating instructions for their equipment and avoid placing a face or object where it could be injured.
Why ordinary objects became a portrait
The project’s expressive force comes from the contrast between a recognizable face and an impersonal-looking inventory. A face signals identity in the usual photographic sense; possessions suggest routines, obligations, work, leisure and taste. Putting them in one frame asks the viewer to read the two kinds of evidence together.
Project wording quoted by a December 2007 MetaFilter post described the goal as: “Our goal is to not only bring all these objects into light but show the owner of them.” The quotation is attributed to the project wording as reproduced by that page, not to a named creator.

What the objects can suggest
- A set of transit cards or work tools may point to a daily routine.
- A worn receipt, lucky charm or photograph may carry personal history that is invisible in a conventional headshot.
- The selection itself can show what a participant considers worth carrying, displaying or leaving out.
These are interpretive possibilities, not objective readings. A 2024 photography teaching resource presents the objects as clues to what may matter to an owner, but the available evidence does not establish that the project measures personality or reveals an “inner self” scientifically.

Can you recreate the idea today?
Yes, as an independent art exercise, using the same broad concept rather than assuming that the old submission channel still exists. A flatbed scanner is the relevant equipment category because historical accounts explicitly describe scanning the face and objects together. No particular brand, model or setting is documented as required.
A practical, low-assumption approach
- Choose a clean, stable scanner surface and read its current operating instructions.
- Select a small group of carried objects whose display you are comfortable making public. Remove sensitive documents, payment details and anything that could expose another person’s private information.
- Arrange the objects and the part of your face you want to show as one composition. Treat the arrangement as a picture, not as a diagnostic test.
- Make a scan using the equipment’s normal controls. Do not infer an exact resolution, lighting setup or software workflow from the historical project; those details were not specified.
- Review the image for identifiable addresses, account numbers, personal correspondence or other information before sharing it.
- Publish only where you understand the current platform’s terms and image-use rules. The original project’s permissions and submission rules are not verified.
Privacy and interpretation matter
A pocket inventory can reveal more than its owner intends. Keys, identity cards, prescription packaging, receipts and workplace items can expose location, health, finances or employment. Cropping, covering or substituting sensitive objects preserves the visual idea without making the participant’s private data part of the image.

Viewers should also resist treating a collection of objects as a definitive biography. People carry items for temporary reasons, emergencies or convenience, and may omit objects that are actually important. The project invites speculation; it does not validate it.

A 2015 retrospective placed Face Your Pockets within a wider interest in photographing or displaying the personal things people carry. It named George Legrady’s Pockets Full of Memories, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s Please Empty Your Pockets and Jason Travis’s What’s in Your Bag? as related examples.
These works are useful context rather than interchangeable versions of the same project. They differ in what personal material is shown, how it is collected or displayed, and whether participation is individual, networked or collective. Face Your Pockets is distinctive for binding the carried objects directly to the owner’s scanned face in one image.

Why the project still works as an idea
The technology was ordinary: a scanner and a set of belongings. That limitation is part of the concept’s strength. Instead of polishing an identity for a profile picture, the participant exposes a small, accidental archive of daily life. The image asks a durable question—what do you carry, and what story does that selection create when placed beside your face?
Its historical status should remain clear. The project is documented as a 2007 participatory artwork, its reported gallery count belongs to that moment, and its original online channels cannot be assumed to operate now. What survives most reliably is the method and the invitation to make a self-portrait from the things already in reach.
