Festival listings describe a roughly 20-minute short, with screenings listed in Oslo, Montreal, and New York in September and October 2026.
What is My Gender Is Black about?
The film’s synopsis treats gender not as something expressed by the body alone, but as something made visible and given meaning through everyday objects, institutions, speech, silence, music, posture, and watching. It describes Black masculinity and sexuality as produced, policed, punished, beautified, feminized, sanctified, athleticized, seated, gifted, and performed. The language suggests a work attentive to the ways social settings and cultural expectations shape how Black male bodies are read.

In the short’s project-page statement, director Terry Blade calls the Black male body “a battleground,” the voice “an archive,” and blackness “a universe of gendered truth.” A director’s note reproduced by Fondation Massimadi says the film rejects separating Blackness from gender or understanding gender apart from history, and asks “what it means to be truly seen” when Black male bodies are viewed through a distorted lens.
The project listing names Marlon Riggs’s Tongues Untied, Isaac Julien’s Looking for Langston, and Arthur Jafa’s Love Is the Message, The Message Is Death as artistic reference points. These are the references stated by the film listing; they do not establish a more specific account of influence.

Is it a short film or a feature?
Festival pages describe a short of about 20 minutes. The project pages, however, list two different runtimes and formats:
| Listing | Format and runtime | Other listed details |
|---|---|---|
| FilmFreeway short listing | Documentary/experimental short; 19 minutes 53 seconds | Completion date: April 10, 2026. Credits Terry Blade as director, writer, and producer. |
| FilmFreeway feature listing | Documentary/experimental feature; 46 minutes | Completion date: July 4, 2026. Credits Blade as director, writer, producer, editor, music supervisor, and sound designer. |
The available listings do not explain how the feature relates to the short, so the runtimes should not be combined or treated as a correction. The Oslo/Fusion, Chelsea Film Festival, and Massimadi pages refer to a short or excerpt of approximately 20 minutes.

Who made the film?
Terry Blade is identified as director by the project and festival listings. The short listing credits Blade as writer and producer; the separate feature listing adds editor, music supervisor, and sound designer. Those credits belong to their respective listings and should not be assumed to describe the same version.
Oslo/Fusion names Cristian Julian Chigbolu, Ujah Ogbole, and Big Sexy in its cast listing. Chelsea’s listing additionally names Jay Hill, Syd Tillman, and James Baldwin. The pages do not clarify whether these differences reflect distinct versions or different listing conventions.
