Exhuma (파묘) is a 2024 South Korean horror mystery thriller about a team of four specialists hired to investigate a wealthy family’s supernatural affliction and relocate an ancestral grave. Directed by Jang Jae-hyun, it stars Kim Go-eun, Lee Do-hyun, Choi Min-sik and Yoo Hae-jin. Here’s what to know about the film, its premise and where to look for it.
What is Exhuma about?
The film follows shaman Hwa-rim and her partner and fellow medium, Bong-gil, after they are called to help an affluent Park family whose descendants and patriarch are suffering. The family lives in the United States, but the investigation leads the practitioners to an ancestral grave in Gangwon-do, South Korea.

Hwa-rim and Bong-gil bring in geomancer Sang-deok and undertaker Young-geun. Together, they set out to exhume and relocate the grave. The story begins as an occult investigation; the excavation brings danger, so the premise is best approached without details of what the team uncovers.
KOBIZ describes the film as a horror mystery thriller concerned with class, history, tradition, religion and superstition. It also notes the use of staged rituals and examination of language on a grave lid. Those elements provide cultural and historical texture, but they do not establish one definitive interpretation of the film’s symbolism.

In a Korean Film Council interview published March 27, 2024, Kim Go-eun said: “As for the language aspect related to Hwa-rim, I contributed ideas on speech patterns.”
When was Exhuma released, and how long is it?
Exhuma was released in South Korea on February 22, 2024. The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) lists its runtime as 133 minutes; the British Board of Film Classification records 133 minutes and 15 seconds, while some listings round it to 134 minutes. These differences in presentation do not, by themselves, establish that different cuts exist.
Is Exhuma based on a true story?
The sources documenting the film describe it as a fictional horror mystery thriller and do not establish that its plot is based on a specific real case. Its use of ritual, burial customs and historical references is not evidence that the supernatural events happened, nor that the film represents every Korean religious or cultural tradition.

How successful was the film?
KOFIC’s database listed 11,915,719 admissions and a total gross of $85,529,723 as of September 13, 2026. These are figures from KOFIC’s dated database entry; they should not be treated as an undated or independently verified worldwide box-office total. KOFIC also records the film in the 2024 Sitges Official Fantastic Selection and lists a Special Jury Prize.
On March 13, 2024, Korea.net reported that release was planned in 133 countries, amid international festival invitations and distribution-rights inquiries attributed to Showbox. That was a distribution plan reported at the time, not confirmation that the film is now available in all 133 countries.
