The film never gives an exact duration. The clearest estimate is about 10 years, attributed to director Harold Ramis by screenwriter Danny Rubin. Ramis later suggested that 10 years was too short and put the loop at 30 or 40 years. Both are estimates, not a number confirmed by the released film.
What is the best-supported estimate?
In a 2017 interview, screenwriter Danny Rubin recalled that Ramis “gauged it at about 10 years.” Rubin added that he thought the movie reflected that sensibility. That makes roughly 10 years the most direct concise answer—but it is Rubin recalling Ramis’s estimate, not dialogue or a precise count supplied by the film. Why do some estimates say 30 or 40 years?
A 2016 New York Film Academy article quotes Ramis saying, “I think the 10-year estimate is too short. It had to be more like 30 or 40 years.” This is a later, longer estimate attributed directly to Ramis by that article. It should be presented alongside the earlier figure rather than treated as a definitive correction: neither estimate is an exact duration established in the film. New York Film Academy’s 2016 article

Why doesn’t the movie settle the question?
The ambiguity was intentional. Rubin said he did not have a specific number in mind; the story was about whether someone given more than one lifetime could change. He also recalled that references to elapsed time were removed after the studio objected to a long loop, leaving viewers to imagine its duration. Rubin’s interview with The Ringer

That is why counting scenes or estimating how long Phil would need to acquire particular skills cannot produce a settled answer. Such calculations depend on assumptions about what happens between scenes and how long each activity takes. They can offer interpretations, but not a verified canon day count. So, how long was Bill Murray’s character trapped?
Phil Connors, played by Bill Murray, is trapped for an unspecified span. If you need one short answer, say about 10 years, by Rubin’s recollection of Ramis’s estimate; add that Ramis later suggested 30–40 years. The released movie deliberately leaves the exact length open.
