What David Otunga alleged about John Cena
On Dec. 5, 2025, former WWE performer David Otunga posted that he was breaking a 15-year silence about how Cena had changed his perception of Cena and WWE. In its account of the post, Operation Sports reported Otunga’s allegation that a missed planned move led Cena to berate him in front of the locker room, and that Otunga was moved out of the locker room afterward.
Otunga described the exchange as “The worst I’ve ever been cussed out or just disrespected to the point where I questioned if I even wanted to work there anymore, where I don’t make a mistake, and I’m disrespected like this, absolutely not.” This is Otunga’s reported account of the incident; the reporting does not independently establish that it happened as described.
What Maven said—and what he could not verify
On Cafe de Rene, former WWE performer Maven discussed Otunga’s comments with host Rene Dupree. Maven said he contacted Otunga afterward and could tell the matter had affected him. He nevertheless stressed that he had not witnessed the events and could not assess the account’s credibility: “If what he says has credence, I don’t know, I wasn’t there.” WrestleTalk’s Dec. 12, 2025 report transcribed Maven’s remarks.

Maven also referred to a separate alleged incident involving Alex Riley, whose real name is Kevin Kiley. Maven said Otunga had spoken about it, but made clear it was not his story to tell: “Again, not my story to tell. Not my story to tell. I wasn’t there.” In the syndicated report, Riley himself said an incident had changed his career path but declined to give details. Maven’s secondhand reference does not fill in what Riley chose not to explain.
Dupree’s positive account was limited to his own experience
Dupree recalled that his own time working with Cena was positive, while qualifying that it came before Cena’s major push and status as a top star. “My experience with John was always good but again this is before he got that mega mega push and was a top guy,” he said, according to Yardbarker’s Dec. 12, 2025 syndication of The Sportster.

That recollection speaks to Dupree’s own interactions in an earlier period. It neither confirms nor disproves Otunga’s account, which concerns a different experience.
Michael Tarver’s separate comments from 2021
Former Nexus member Michael Tarver described his own backstage experience with Cena in a 2021 interview. Tarver said the treatment felt “relentless,” but added that he did not want to call himself a bullying victim and that he and Cena eventually ended on good terms. POST Wrestling’s Apr. 29, 2021 report quoted Tarver’s remarks from Talkin’ Sass.

Because Tarver’s comments predate Otunga’s 2025 post and concern Tarver’s own interactions, they are background rather than corroboration of Otunga’s specific allegation.

The accounts differ in both timing and firsthand knowledge: Otunga made the central allegation about his own experience; Maven spoke with Otunga afterward but said he was not present; Dupree recalled a positive experience from before Cena’s top-star push; and Tarver spoke separately about his own experience in 2021. The reviewed reporting documents no independent finding on Otunga’s claims and no direct Cena response to these specific allegations.
