“Fear of the Unholy” is the penultimate episode of Evil, season 4, episode 13, released August 15, 2024. Its final case sends the assessors to investigate physicist Johan Taupin for possible occult ties just as St. Joseph’s closes; David, meanwhile, faces Vatican scrutiny and learns he is being sent to Rome. The episode’s church-focused critique is a critical interpretation of its story, not its official premise.

What happens in “Fear of the Unholy”?
Spoilers follow. David celebrates what is described as the church’s final Mass. A note summons him to a later meeting. The Vatican files have been removed, but the assessors are given one last case: determine whether physicist Johan Taupin has occult connections before he joins a Vatican scientific body.
The case against Johan Taupin
Taupin is presented in the recaps as a celebrated physicist who uses a wheelchair and communicates through a device. His assistant and students enter the investigation, and Kristen challenges his behavior toward her. The assessors find no clear evidence of occult involvement. The story instead points toward a medical or technological explanation for Taupin’s condition; that is a plot development, not medical information or advice.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The case puts the team’s judgment under pressure: an unusual condition and unsettling behavior are not, by themselves, proof of a supernatural cause. That tension between scientific explanation and occult suspicion is one of the episode’s central threads.
The missing relic and St. Joseph’s closure
As St. Joseph’s is deconsecrated, a relic goes missing. Sister Andrea searches for it and encounters a demon along the way. The recaps say she retrieves the relic, then later speaks with David as they both face departures from the church community.

David’s loyalty and his next assignment
David is questioned about whether he would lie for Kristen and says that he would. He later confronts Leland and tries to protect her. After hearing Leland’s offer, David does not accept it at face value. He eventually learns that his next assignment is in Rome.
The final scenes emphasize separation: David tells Kristen and Ben he is leaving, while Sister Andrea is being retired to a silent retreat. She cautions David against letting Church bureaucracy deform his abilities. That warning belongs to the drama’s character conflict; it is not guidance about the real Catholic Church.

Why the episode is described as taking aim at the Church
A review aggregated with the episode listing calls it the series’ penultimate episode and says it “takes aim at the church.” That phrase is a critic’s framing, not the official logline. The episode’s institutional storyline supports that reading through the closing of St. Joseph’s, the Vatican’s final assessment, and David’s scrutiny and reassignment. At the same time, the story gives the characters’ personal departures and convictions equal weight, so the institutional critique is not the whole episode.
