Sean Boswell’s Mitsubishi in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is a 2005 Lancer Evolution IX “Evil-R” by APR Performance, not an Evo VIII. Its grille and bumper were altered to resemble the earlier model, while the movie build’s most consequential mechanical change was converting the all-wheel-drive car to rear-wheel drive for drifting.

Is Sean’s Tokyo Drift car an Evo VIII or Evo IX?

It is an Evolution IX. The Petersen Automotive Museum identifies the featured vehicle as a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX “Evil-R” by APR Performance, the model for the car Han gives Sean. Its Evo VIII-like appearance comes from production changes to the grille and bumper—not from the car being an Evo VIII.

Was the movie Evo really rear-wheel drive?

Yes. Edmunds reported in 2006 that Mitsubishi contributed 10 Japanese-market Evo IXs to the production, and eight were converted to rear-wheel drive using a kit developed by Rhys Millen Racing (RMR). The conversion removed the splines that drove the front wheels and capped the transfer-case output holes. That setup was a purpose-built change for the movie’s drifting scenes, rather than the standard configuration of an Evolution IX.

What was changed on the Tokyo Drift Evo?

Chassis, wheels and tires

Edmunds’ account of the movie-car build describes Eibach springs lowering the car, an APR wide-body kit, 19-by-8.5-inch Ray’s G-Games 99B wheels and 255/35R19 Toyo Proxes T1R tires. RMR modified the steering knuckles to increase steering angle and fitted larger Brembo discs and calipers. These are historical details of the film build, not a parts list or fitment recommendation for another car.

Engine and interior

The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine was essentially stock, according to Edmunds, apart from an RMR exhaust. Inside, the build included AutoMeter gauges mounted on a carbon-fiber plate and a Sparco steering wheel with a quick-disconnect hub; the Recaro seats remained.

How fast and powerful was the movie car?

In Edmunds’ 2006 testing, the rear-drive movie car produced 289.5 hp at the rear wheels on a chassis dynamometer, ran from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds at 103.6 mph. Those figures describe the tested rear-wheel-drive movie build, not factory Evo IX specifications.

For context, Edmunds compared it with a previously tested stock U.S.-market Evo IX, which recorded 0–60 mph in 4.9 seconds and a quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds at 103 mph. These are results from two distinct test configurations; the rear-drive conversion changes how the car puts power down, particularly from a launch. Edmunds’ conclusion was that the all-wheel-drive Lancer Evolution IX is better suited to uses other than drifting.

How many Tokyo Drift Evos were built, and does one survive?

Edmunds reported that 10 Japanese-market Evo IXs were contributed to the production and that eight were converted to rear-wheel drive. Separately, the Petersen Automotive Museum says production built 10 replicas and that all were destroyed during filming. The museum identifies its displayed car as the only surviving “Tokyo Drift Evo.” Its page credits Dustin Williams as the current owner and says he carried out a period-correct restoration. The different counts describe what each source reports—the cars contributed and converted, and the replicas built and destroyed—rather than establishing that all counts refer to precisely the same group of vehicles.

Why did the production need so many cars?

Edmunds’ behind-the-scenes report identifies Dennis McCarthy as the picture-car coordinator and describes a large fleet assembled for hero shots, stunts and crashes. McCarthy told Edmunds: “We have over 200 cars for this movie, so they came from different places.” The variety of production needs helps explain why a film car’s identity and appearance can differ from a standard showroom example.
