You do not need expensive equipment for every kind of stream. The right setup depends on what you want to show: a phone is convenient for an update on the move, while an encoder gives you more control over gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, and external audio or video.
How do I start live streaming on YouTube?
- Check eligibility. YouTube’s general live-stream guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Mobile streaming has additional requirements, including a subscriber threshold. Check YouTube’s current eligibility page before planning an event because platform rules can change.
- Enable live streaming. If this is your first time, activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it before the day of your broadcast.
- Choose a streaming method. Use a phone for a mobile update, a webcam for a straightforward computer-camera broadcast, an encoder for gameplay or a produced stream, or your console’s built-in broadcast workflow for console gameplay.
- Prepare your broadcast. Set the title, audience and privacy options, and schedule the stream if appropriate. Check that the content and any music, clips, images, or other material you plan to use are permitted.
- Test before going live. Check upload capacity, microphone levels, picture, and the stream preview. For an important event, rehearse the complete workflow well in advance.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Confirm that viewers can access the event and keep an eye on audio and video while streaming. When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder or device broadcast.
YouTube’s help pages describe the platform’s current requirements and features; check them again when you set up, especially if you have not streamed from the account before.
What do I need to live stream on YouTube?
At minimum, you need an eligible YouTube channel, a device or encoder suited to your chosen method, and a sufficiently stable internet connection. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary. A computer webcam and built-in microphone may be enough for a basic talk or update; an encoder setup can use additional equipment, but those accessories are options rather than universal prerequisites.
Optional gear by stream type
- Webcam stream: A computer with a webcam. A separate microphone can help when the built-in audio does not suit the room or format.
- Encoder stream: Encoder software or hardware; a webcam, external microphone, and headphones are common options, not requirements for every stream.
- Mobile stream: A supported phone or tablet. A tripod can make a stationary shot easier to frame, but it is a practical accessory, not a YouTube requirement.
- Console stream: A supported console and its broadcast workflow; consult the console maker’s current instructions for device-specific setup.
Which YouTube live-streaming method should I choose?
| Method | Good fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Vlogging, field updates, or a quick broadcast away from a desk | Convenient and portable, but mobile eligibility and supported-device requirements apply. |
| Webcam | A simple computer-camera broadcast | A quick route to go live from a computer with a webcam. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio and video | More production control; you configure YouTube’s stream URL and key in encoder software or hardware. |
| Console | Gameplay streamed directly from a console | Setup depends on the console maker and model; follow its current instructions. |
Do not choose an encoder just because it sounds more professional. For a simple face-to-camera stream, a webcam can be easier. Choose an encoder when you need to combine sources, capture a screen or game, or control a more involved production.

Can I live stream from my phone?
Yes, if the channel and device meet YouTube’s mobile requirements. The mobile help page lists a minimum of 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and activation of live streaming. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. The page also lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later as supported operating systems; check the current help page for updated requirements and device availability.
The 50-subscriber condition is specific to mobile streaming in the cited YouTube guidance. Do not assume it applies to webcam, encoder, or console broadcasts. For a mobile broadcast, check framing, lighting, microphone pickup, and network stability before starting; a phone tripod is optional if you need a steadier shot.

Do I need 50 subscribers to live stream on YouTube?
YouTube’s mobile-specific requirements list at least 50 subscribers. That threshold should not be generalized to every streaming method: the general live-stream guidance describes separate channel requirements, and mobile adds its own eligibility conditions. Verify the live requirements page for your method and account before scheduling a stream.
How to set up a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Enable live streaming in YouTube. Allow time for first-time activation, which may take up to 24 hours.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, create a stream or select the event you want to use. Set the title, privacy, and scheduling options that apply to your broadcast.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key into your encoder. The encoder needs YouTube’s destination details to send the broadcast. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it publicly.
- Configure and start the encoder. Select the intended video and audio sources, then begin sending the stream to YouTube.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the picture and sound are correct. For a scheduled workflow, go live from Live Control Room after the preview is ready.
- Monitor the event. Check the stream throughout, including audio and video. If you use a failover encoder, test that playback switches to it as expected.
- End the event cleanly. End the broadcast in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on that archive behavior for longer streams.
What upload speed and stream settings do I need?
For sending a broadcast, upload capacity matters more than download speed. YouTube recommends keeping the combined streaming bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. A connection’s upload speed can be lower than its download speed, and other people or devices using the same network can reduce what is available to your stream.

- Run an outbound speed test on the connection and device you will use for the broadcast.
- Compare available upload bandwidth with the total stream bitrate, including a backup stream if you have one.
- Leave the recommended 20% headroom rather than planning to use all measured capacity.
- Test at the time and place you expect to stream; a shared or busy network may perform differently from an idle one.
The available guidance cited here does not establish one universal resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe interval for every encoder and stream. Use the current YouTube encoder recommendations and your encoder’s matching settings rather than copying a single preset without considering the content and connection.
How should I rehearse before an event?
For encoder events, YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not a guarantee that a stream will work without testing.

- Inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- Listen for clean, correctly routed audio and check that the picture is stable.
- Confirm the stream is accessible to the intended audience using the selected privacy settings.
- If you have a failover encoder, test the playback handoff rather than assuming it will work.
Can I stream vertically or horizontally?
YouTube’s current help describes vertical live streams as eligible to appear in the Shorts feed and as offering a mobile full-screen viewing experience. The documented Live Control Room workflow includes horizontal and vertical outputs, with layout choices such as center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. Availability and feature behavior can vary, so check the current workflow in your account before promising a particular layout or discovery outcome. Choose framing for the actual content: a vertical composition may suit a phone-first presentation, while horizontal framing may fit gameplay, presentations, or wide scenes.
What YouTube rules should I check before going live?
YouTube says live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and it may remove streams or restrict live access. Check current platform rules and privacy settings before broadcasting. Also make sure you have the rights needed for music, footage, images, and other material you include; having a file available does not by itself mean you may stream it. Do not try to evade an active live restriction by switching to another channel.

Common YouTube live-stream problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | The channel is not verified, has a recent live restriction, or first-time activation is incomplete. | Review the current eligibility requirements and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| Mobile live streaming is unavailable | The account, subscriber count, or device does not meet mobile-specific requirements. | Check the mobile eligibility page, account status, and supported-device requirements. |
| The encoder is not sending a preview | The encoder may have the wrong destination details, or may not be sending a signal. | Check that YouTube’s stream URL and key are entered correctly, then confirm the encoder is running and sending. |
| Video or audio stutters | Available upload capacity may be insufficient or constrained by other network use. | Measure upload capacity, compare it with total bitrate, leave 20% headroom, and reduce competing network traffic. |
| The preview looks or sounds wrong | The selected sources, framing, or audio routing may not match the intended production. | Check the preview, source selection, microphone input, and monitoring before going live. |
| Viewers cannot access the event | The event’s privacy or access settings may not match the audience you expect. | Confirm the event’s visibility and check its availability from the intended viewer context before the broadcast. |
