In HBO’s Game of Thrones, the White Walkers are supernatural beings who command the dead. In George R. R. Martin’s novels, those beings are called the Others. The show gives them a specific origin and a leader called the Night King; the books have not established that same origin or character. Keeping the two versions separate is essential to understanding their lore.
What are the White Walkers?
In the HBO adaptation, White Walkers are ancient, humanoid supernatural beings associated with ice and the far North. They are distinct from wights: wights are dead people reanimated to serve the White Walkers. The distinction matters because the show depicts different ways of dealing with each. In its season-six recap, TIME reports that dragonglass can kill a White Walker; the adaptation also shows the undead army as a separate threat.
Martin’s novels call the corresponding mysterious beings the Others, rather than White Walkers. The books describe them through character accounts and histories, leaving more unanswered about their nature and origins than the television series does. Who created the White Walkers?
What the HBO show establishes
Season six shows Bran Stark witnessing the Children of the Forest transform a captured man into the first White Walker. The Children create him as a weapon against the First Men. This is the television adaptation’s stated origin; it should not be treated as established fact about the Others in the novels. What the novels leave open
The novels have not supplied an equivalent, definitive origin scene. Their accounts of the Others and the ancient conflict are filtered through characters, histories, and legends. The deeper relationship between the Others and the Children of the Forest remains unresolved in Martin’s story. A firm answer about who created the Others would therefore go beyond what the books establish.

How are White Walkers different from wights?
In the show, White Walkers are the beings directing the supernatural threat; wights are the reanimated dead in their service. Calling every member of the undead army a White Walker blurs that distinction. TIME’s episode recap describes the show’s separation between the White Walkers and the wights, and identifies dragonglass as a way to kill a White Walker.
What is the Long Night?
The Long Night is an ancient catastrophe in Westerosi lore, not a fully verified history with one universally agreed account. Westerosi stories connect it to the Others arriving from the Lands of Always Winter, bringing cold and darkness, and raising the dead. Some tellings describe the darkness as lasting a generation. That duration belongs to the fictional tradition, not to a real-world historical record.

Other peoples have their own accounts of a prolonged darkness. Rhoynar and Yi Ti traditions differ in how they explain it, so the Westerosi version should not be presented as the only account in the world of the story. The novels’ histories preserve these varying traditions rather than resolving them into a single confirmed explanation. Is the Night King the Night’s King?
No. The Night King is the leader depicted in HBO’s series. The novels refer to a separate legendary figure, the Night’s King, with an apostrophe: a former Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch associated with the Nightfort and a corpse queen. His story is told as legend, and its details vary. He is not established as the show’s Night King. The show’s dialogue also frames the Children of the Forest and First Men as former enemies who united against a common danger. In a season-seven cave scene, Jon Snow tells Daenerys: “They were here together, the Children and the First Men…They fought together against their common enemy. Despite their differences, despite their suspicions, together. We need to do the same if we’re going to survive.
