Prime Video’s live-action Tomb Raider is officially happening. Amazon MGM Studios and Crystal Dynamics ordered the series in May 2024, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge as creator, writer, executive producer and co-showrunner, and Sophie Turner playing Lara Croft.
Production began in January 2026, briefly paused after Turner suffered a minor injury, and was later reported filming in Spain. Amazon has not announced a premiere date, episode count, trailer or full synopsis. Trade coverage currently points to 2027, but that remains an expectation rather than a confirmed release date.
When will Prime Video’s Tomb Raider be released?
There is no announced premiere date. Variety reported that the series was expected in 2027, but Amazon has not specified a month, quarter or release strategy. It is also unknown whether episodes will arrive weekly or all at once.
Spanish location reports from May and June 2026 show filming activity, but they do not establish a launch date. Until Amazon publishes a schedule, “2027” should be treated as an industry expectation, not a booking viewers can rely on.

Sophie Turner is the new live-action Lara Croft
Sophie Turner is confirmed as Lara Croft. Amazon’s announcement presented her first-look image as Lara and identified her as the lead of this new television interpretation.
This is not an announced continuation of Angelina Jolie’s two films or Alicia Vikander’s 2018 reboot. It is also not confirmed to continue Netflix’s animated Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. No shared continuity with any earlier adaptation has been announced.
Amazon’s cast announcement confirms Turner’s role.

What is the story?
Very little plot has been released. Amazon describes the project as an “epic, globe-trotting” live-action series centered on Lara Croft. The announced character clues suggest Lara will encounter a government official and people seeking to use her talents, but they do not reveal the central artifact, mystery or villain.
No specific game has been identified as the source. The series is not confirmed as an adaptation of the 1996 original, the 2013 reboot, the Survivor trilogy, or any other named title. It is safest to describe it as a new live-action interpretation of the franchise.
- There is no confirmed origin story or starting point in Lara’s life.
- There is no confirmation that the plot follows Shadow of the Tomb Raider or another game.
- Appearances by Croft Manor, Lara’s parents, Amanda Evert, Zip, Winston or Jonah Maiava have not been announced.
- A connection to Netflix’s animated series has not been established.
Amazon Games’ series-order announcement and GamesRadar’s reporting provide the available plot context.

How does it fit with the games, Netflix series and film plans?
Amazon is pursuing Tomb Raider across several media, but a shared narrative universe has not been confirmed.
Games
Amazon and Crystal Dynamics are developing Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of the original game announced for 2026, and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, a new Crystal Dynamics adventure announced for 2027 at the time of the initial announcement. Those projects show a wider franchise strategy, not a confirmed television-game storyline.
See the official Tomb Raider site and Amazon Games’ publishing announcement.
Earlier screen adaptations
Angelina Jolie starred in two early-2000s films, Alicia Vikander led the 2018 film reboot, and Hayley Atwell voices Lara in Netflix’s animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. Turner’s show is a separate live-action interpretation unless Amazon later states otherwise.

Film development
The Amazon MGM Studios–Crystal Dynamics partnership also covers Tomb Raider stories in film. The separate film development should not be treated as the television series’ sequel, prequel or continuity without an explicit announcement.
Trailer, episode count and other unknowns
- Trailer: none has been released.
- Episode count: not announced.
- Premiere date: not announced; 2027 is only a reported expectation.
- Release pattern: weekly versus full-season launch is unknown.
- Rating and runtime: not announced.
- Full synopsis: not released.
- Filming completion: not confirmed.
How viewers will watch it
The series is being made for Prime Video. A viewer will generally need access to Prime Video or an Amazon Prime membership when it launches, subject to local plans and pricing. Amazon has not yet confirmed regional availability, standalone-plan details or whether access terms will differ by country. Current US Prime pricing cited by Amazon editorial coverage was $14.99 per month or $139 per year, but rates can change; check Amazon’s Prime page before subscribing.
Netflix’s animated series and the earlier films are separate titles, not alternate ways to watch the Sophie Turner series.
Bottom line
Prime Video’s Tomb Raider is a real, ordered live-action series with Sophie Turner as Lara Croft and Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Chad Hodge leading the creative team. Production started in January 2026, survived a temporary injury-related pause and was later reported filming in Spain. The essential blanks remain the premiere date, episode count, trailer, complete plot and confirmed continuity with the games or other adaptations. Until Amazon fills them, 2027 is a useful expectation—but not a guaranteed release date.
