Spoilers for all of Season 1, including the finale.
Before Season 2, remember this: Lumon’s severance procedure divides each employee’s memories into an “innie,” who knows only life at work, and an “outie,” who knows only life outside it. In the Season 1 finale, the innies briefly cross that boundary—and Mark, Helly and Irving each learn something that changes how they understand their lives.

How severance shapes life at Lumon
At Lumon Industries, Mark Scout leads a team of employees who have undergone a surgical procedure that separates their work memories from their personal ones. The innie and outie share a body, but neither can remember the other’s experiences. For an innie, the office is not simply a job; it is the whole life they can recall.
Mark’s choice to undergo severance is tied to his grief: his outie believes his wife, Gemma, is dead. The premise grew from creator Dan Erickson’s question about mentally skipping an office workday: “What if I could just jump ahead to the end of the day and have already done the work?” The Television Academy describes the series as exploring “identity, grief and the corporate machine.” Television Academy

What the Season 1 finale revealed
Mark, Helly and Irving’s innies use Lumon’s overtime contingency to wake up in the outside world, where their outies’ lives are unfolding without their memories. Dylan stays behind at Lumon to operate the controls. Each innie gets only a brief glimpse of what lies beyond the office.
Helly discovers she is Helena Eagan
Helly wakes at a Lumon gala and learns that her outie is Helena Eagan, a member of the family behind the company. She tries to tell the gathering about the innies’ treatment, but the contingency ends before she can get the full message out.

Irving finds Burt outside Lumon
Following the clues he has collected, Irving reaches Burt’s home. He finds Burt there with another man, confronting a life beyond Lumon that his innie does not know how to enter.
Mark recognizes Gemma
At a gathering at his sister Devon’s home, Mark sees a wedding photograph and recognizes Ms. Casey—the wellness counselor he knows at work—as Gemma, the wife his outie believes is dead. He tries to tell Devon, “She’s alive!”

Milchick ends the overtime contingency
Milchick reaches Dylan and stops the switch. The innies return to their usual office state before they can give their outies a complete account of what happened. The finale’s three revelations land in different ways: Helly encounters Lumon’s public spectacle, Irving seeks a personal connection, and Mark faces the return of his wife in a place where he cannot explain what he knows.
What carries into Season 2
The finale leaves the innies with urgent questions but no full chance to communicate their discoveries. Mark has seen evidence that Gemma is alive and working at Lumon as Ms. Casey; Helly has learned that her outie is Helena Eagan and tried to expose the innies’ experience; and Irving has found Burt outside the office. The story picks up with Mark and his friends confronting the consequences of crossing the severance barrier, according to Apple’s season description.
