This ranking treats the Jericho incident as a tap in the televised segment even though accounts disagree about whether it came during the match or after it. A developmental tap and a disputed referee-called finish fall outside the core ranking.
How this ranking counts Cena’s taps
There is no official WWE tally in the available reporting. Fightful’s list supports five main-roster occasions; 411MANIA adds a developmental match and describes a controversial 2005 finish that does not qualify as a clear, voluntary tap. The ranking below weighs historical significance, match stakes and format, finish clarity, and the contrast with Cena’s “never give up” identity. The order is an editorial judgment, not an objective ranking established by the sources.
The five reported main-roster taps
5. Chris Jericho — SmackDown, July 2002
This early-career incident ranks fifth because it happened in a post-match segment, rather than as the finish of a major match. Fightful dates it to July 18 and says the contest had already ended in a disqualification when Jericho applied the Walls of Jericho and Cena tapped. 411MANIA instead says the match was taped July 2 and aired July 4, and describes the televised match as ending with Cena tapping. The accounts therefore differ both on the date and on whether the tap was part of the match or came afterward; the precise broadcast date and classification are unsettled. Fightful; 411MANIA.
4. Kurt Angle — No Mercy, October 19, 2003
At No Mercy, Angle caught Cena in the Ankle Lock and made him submit. Unlike the Jericho incident, this is reported as a clear in-match submission on a major event. It ranks fourth because the later Angle match had a more consequential and complicated format, while this was one of Cena’s first documented main-roster submissions. Fightful; 411MANIA.

3. Chris Benoit — SmackDown, December 2003
Benoit submitted Cena with the Crippler Crossface in December 2003. The exact date is not resolved by the two accounts: Fightful gives December 4, while 411MANIA reports December 2 in San Jose and says the show was taped that day. This ranking uses the month rather than choosing between conflicting dates. The finish is a straightforward in-match submission, but the available accounts do not establish enough to place it above the two higher-ranked moments. Fightful; 411MANIA.
2. Kurt Angle — No Way Out, February 15, 2004
Angle made Cena submit to the Ankle Lock again at No Way Out. This time, the match was a triple threat involving Big Show, giving the submission a distinct context from their No Mercy encounter. The repeat opponent and hold make the pair especially notable: Angle is the reported opponent on two of the five main-roster occasions. Fightful; 411MANIA.

1. Gunther — Saturday Night’s Main Event, December 13, 2025
Gunther submitted Cena with a sleeper in Cena’s final match. Fightful called it Cena’s first tap in more than two decades, linking the finish to the long interval since the earlier reported incidents and to the “never give up” identity that defined his career. The match makes this the most significant entry: it was not merely another submission, but the closing in-ring chapter of Cena’s WWE career. WWE’s profile says he retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025. Fightful; WWE.
Two edge cases that change the count
The Prototype’s developmental match with Ron Waterman
411MANIA reports that on January 30, 2002, while performing as the Prototype, Cena tapped to Ron Waterman’s ankle lock in a developmental match. The referee was distracted, so the tap did not count as a loss. It falls outside a count limited to main-roster WWE submissions, but a tally of every visible tap would need to acknowledge it. 411MANIA.

The disputed Eric Bischoff finish in 2005
411MANIA also describes an October 24, 2005 match with Angle in which Cena reached for the ropes. Eric Bischoff tapped Cena’s hand on the mat and called the match a submission win. Because the account characterizes this as a referee-manipulated finish rather than a clean tap by Cena, it is not included in the ranking. 411MANIA.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the count can—and cannot—settle
The best-supported concise answer is five reported main-roster occasions, with qualifications around the Jericho segment and conflicting dates for two early incidents. The developmental Prototype tap raises the total only if the scope includes developmental wrestling; the 2005 Bischoff call is disputed and should not be silently counted as a clean submission. The available sources are secondary wrestling publications, not an official WWE enumeration. 411MANIA columnist Ryan Byers answered the claim that Cena had never tapped with “He is fiction.” The quip captures the distinction between a heroic character and a wrestler whose recorded career includes losses by submission. 411MANIA.
