For a first watch, follow release order: it tracks how the franchise unfolded and avoids constant jumps between shows. For a rewatch focused on story time, use the approximate chronological order below. This guide covers the seven principal live-action series—not every web short or companion production.
Which The Walking Dead series are included?
AMC Global Media groups the original series and six spin-offs as the seven principal live-action TV series: The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Tales of the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: Dead City, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. AMC’s catalog also includes companion material such as Fear the Walking Dead: Dead in the Water and digital shorts; those are outside the sequences here. AMC Global Media’s franchise announcement reported 371 episodes across the seven series on July 30, 2026. The original series premiered October 31, 2010 and ran for 11 seasons and 177 episodes.

What order should I watch The Walking Dead in?
For a first-time viewer, release order is the clearest option. Should I watch Fear the Walking Dead before The Walking Dead?
Not before the original if this is your first franchise watch. The release-order guide starts with The Walking Dead seasons 1–5, then brings in Fear the Walking Dead season 1. That gives you the original show’s opening run before alternating between the series. AMC confirmed that Fear the Walking Dead season 8 was its final season in its 2023 announcement about the spin-offs. Read AMC’s announcement.

What is the chronological order of The Walking Dead shows?
For a rewatch organized around story time, GamesRadar+ proposes this broad sequence. Treat it as a practical guide, not a scene-by-scene timeline: the anthology episodes in Tales of the Walking Dead span different periods, while The Ones Who Live overlaps some later events in the main show and includes flashbacks. The placement below excludes those flashbacks.
- Fear the Walking Dead seasons 1–3
- The Walking Dead seasons 1–8
- Fear the Walking Dead season 4
- Tales of the Walking Dead season 1
- The Walking Dead season 9, episodes 1–5
- Fear the Walking Dead season 5
- The Walking Dead season 9, episodes 6–16
- Fear the Walking Dead seasons 6–7
- The Walking Dead season 10
- The Walking Dead: World Beyond seasons 1–2
- The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, excluding flashbacks
- The Walking Dead season 11
- Fear the Walking Dead season 8
- The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon seasons 1–3
- The Walking Dead: Dead City seasons 1–3
Release order or chronological order?
| Approach | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Release order | First-time viewers who want a straightforward path through the expanding franchise. | It interleaves series and splits some seasons into episode blocks. |
| Chronological order | Rewatchers who want to follow the broad story timeline. | It is approximate: anthology stories do not fit one slot, and flashbacks complicate placement. |
Where will the series stream?
Streaming rights vary by territory and change over time. In an announcement dated July 30, 2026, AMC Global Media said the six spin-offs would begin arriving on Netflix globally from 2027, with start dates dependent on territory and existing licenses expiring. The announcement also addressed AMC+ availability where offered; it does not establish one universal launch date or current availability in every country. See AMC Global Media’s announcement for the stated rollout.
