Netflix’s Stranger Things 5 cast guide names D&D labels for six characters: Eleven is a Sorcerer, Will a Cleric, Mike a Paladin, Dustin a Bard, Lucas a Ranger, and Max a Zoomer. It does not assign a class to every character viewers might consider a main character, including Erica, Steve, Nancy, Jonathan, Robin, Hopper, and Joyce.
Netflix’s D&D labels for the main characters
The roster below reports the labels in Netflix Tudum’s December 4, 2025 cast guide. Its descriptions offer character context, but the guide does not explain the rules or reasoning behind each label.
| Character | Netflix guide label | Context in the guide |
|---|---|---|
| Eleven | Sorcerer | A girl with psionic abilities, raised as part of a secret government experiment. |
| Will Byers | Cleric | His abduction on November 6, 1983, and his continuing connection to the Upside Down are central to his story. |
| Mike Wheeler | Paladin | The Party’s leader, who fights alongside his friends against Upside Down monsters. |
| Dustin Henderson | Bard | The Party’s science nerd, known for discoveries involving the Upside Down and Vecna. |
| Lucas Sinclair | Ranger | Pragmatic and initially skeptical of Eleven, he later becomes one of her close friends. |
| Max Mayfield | Zoomer | A skateboarder and arcade-game whiz. |
Why Max’s label is different
Netflix calls Max a “Zoomer.” That is the guide’s exact designation; it does not identify it as one of the conventional class labels it gives the other five characters. Replacing it with a standard class would go beyond what this source says.
Characters Netflix does not assign a class to
The cast guide gives no D&D class label for Erica Sinclair, Steve Harrington, Nancy Wheeler, Jonathan Byers, Robin Buckley, Jim Hopper, or Joyce Byers. “Not specified by Netflix’s guide” is the accurate answer for those entries—not evidence that the characters could not be matched with a class in a fan interpretation.

Erica’s D&D connection
Erica is part of the show’s D&D story even though Netflix’s current cast guide does not name a class for her. In its May 27, 2022 feature on D&D’s influence, Netflix says Dustin and Lucas give her a D&D set at the end of Season 3 and quotes co-creator Ross Duffer discussing her entry into the game. Neither detail establishes a class assignment.
The other unassigned characters
Netflix’s guide describes Steve, Nancy, Jonathan, Robin, Hopper, and Joyce in relation to the story and its conflicts, but attaches no D&D class labels to them. A proposed class for any of them should therefore be presented as an editorial or fan reading, not as a Netflix designation.

Why Dungeons & Dragons matters in the series
D&D is more than a roster of character labels in Stranger Things. Netflix says the first episode shows Will, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin playing, and that the game gives the children a way to make sense of supernatural events. Ross Duffer explained, “They know monsters from D&D, so they’re going to go, ‘Well, this reminds me of this from Dungeons & Dragons.’” Matt Duffer described the larger story as “like a massive D&D campaign, where the role-playing completely takes over their lives.” Both comments appear in Netflix Tudum’s May 27, 2022 interview with the co-creators. The feature also identifies Eddie as the Hellfire Club’s Dungeon Master.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why other class lists may disagree
Not every published list uses Netflix’s labels. A July 7, 2022 Nerdist article is an editorial interpretation: it calls Mike a Paladin and Lucas a Ranger, but describes Will as a Wizard and Eleven as a Mage. It presents Dustin as originally the group’s Bard before suggesting an Artificer reading. Those alternatives are not the same as Netflix’s later cast-guide assignments. When the question is what Netflix says, the 2025 guide is the direct source; when discussing other class matches, name them as interpretations.
