My order is Season 1, Season 4, Season 3, Season 2, then Season 5, judged by atmosphere, character work, originality, pacing, and payoff—not by a claim of objective consensus.
All five seasons have been released, and Netflix’s official series page lists Seasons 1–5. The order below weighs what each season contributes to the larger story against how well it works on its own. Aggregator scores offer useful context, but they do not settle a subjective ranking: Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic differ notably on Season 2 and Season 4.
1. Season 1
The first season remains the series’ most complete piece of storytelling. Its small-town mystery unfolds with a clear sense of discovery: a missing child, a tight-knit group of friends, and a threat whose strangeness is more compelling because the show initially leaves so much unexplained. The scale is intimate, the character introductions are efficient, and the supernatural elements deepen the human story rather than crowding it out.
That balance gives Season 1 the strongest combination of atmosphere, originality, and payoff. It establishes the emotional and visual language that later seasons expand, while still feeling like a satisfying story in its own right.
#1 Best Overall
- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
It has eight episodes. In the current scores displayed by Rotten Tomatoes (accessed 2026), it leads the five seasons with a 97% Tomatometer score. Metacritic displays a Metascore of 76. These are different aggregate measures, not grades on a shared scale, and the displayed scores can change.
2. Season 4
Season 4 earns second place by making the threat feel genuinely unsettling again. Its darker tone and Vecna’s presence give the horror a more focused shape, while the season’s major reveals connect the show’s mythology to its characters in memorable ways. The Nancy-and-Vecna possession sequence is one measure of how forcefully the season’s imagery landed: Netflix reported it as the most rewatched scene in its 2025 account of the series.
The season’s ambition is also its chief weakness. Its nine episodes are expansive, and the separate character groups and storylines can make the pacing feel uneven. The scale brings spectacle and strong set pieces, but the show sometimes takes longer than necessary to bring its threads together.
Rank #2
- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 89% Tomatometer score and Metacritic a 69 Metascore when accessed in 2026. The scores underscore that there is no single critical verdict: Season 4 ties Season 3 on Rotten Tomatoes but sits below it on Metacritic.

Season 3 makes a deliberate tonal turn toward bright colors, bigger comedy, and a more overtly heightened 1980s sensibility. That shift gives the season a distinct identity. Robin’s introduction adds a lively new dynamic, the flayed storyline supplies escalating body horror, and the Starcourt finale brings the season’s strands together in a large-scale finish.
The trade-off is that the show’s new maximalism will not suit everyone. Its jokes and spectacle can make the danger feel less eerie than in Season 1, and the busier style sacrifices some of the earlier seasons’ quiet unease. Still, the bolder mood and effective finale make it a stronger whole than Season 2 for this ranking.
Rank #3
Season 3 has eight episodes. Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 89% Tomatometer score and Metacritic a 72 Metascore in 2026. Tom’s Guide’s ranking of Seasons 1–4 likewise praised its 1980s flavor, Robin, and Starcourt climax; that assessment predates Season 5 and represents one critic’s view.
4. Season 2
Season 2 deepens the characters and raises the stakes, but it has a harder time feeling as fresh as the season that introduced Hawkins and its mysteries. Some of its story beats repeat the first season’s rhythms, so its strongest moments—especially its character work—do not always add up to an equally focused overall arc.
“The Lost Sister” is the clearest dividing line. Its departure from the main Hawkins story is an attempt to widen the world and give Eleven a different kind of challenge; for some viewers, that detour interrupts the season’s momentum. Tom’s Guide placed Season 2 last among the first four, citing the sense of retreading and the divisive episode.
Rank #4
- A love letter to the ‘80s classic genre films that captivated a generation, STRANGER THINGS is a thrilling drama set in the seemingly normal Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana.
But the aggregate scores tell a different story. In 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 94% Tomatometer score, second-highest among the five seasons, while Metacritic displayed a 78 Metascore—the highest of all five. Those contrasting results are a useful reminder that valuing consistency and valuing freshness can lead to different rankings. Season 2 has nine episodes.

The final season completes the series, but in this ranking it sits last because its role as a conclusion is not the same as the tight, self-contained discovery of Season 1 or the distinctive tonal and horror turns that lift Seasons 3 and 4. Its strongest case is the scale of the final chapter and the chance to see the show bring its long-running conflict to a close; its weaker case is that a conclusion has to carry the weight of what came before, not simply add another escalation.
This placement is an editorial judgment, not a verdict on every viewer’s experience. Season 5 also had a substantial launch: Netflix reported 59.6 million views for Volume 1 in its premiere week in 2025, describing it at the time as the biggest premiere week in its history for an English-language show. That figure refers specifically to Volume 1’s premiere week, not the full season’s eventual audience.

Season 5 has eight episodes. Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 83% Tomatometer score in 2026, the lowest of the five seasons in that snapshot; Metacritic displayed a 71 Metascore, placing it above Season 4. The different positions reflect how aggregator scores can tell different stories, and neither determines how satisfying the finale will be for an individual viewer.
How the rankings compare with review scores
The following figures are the scores and episode counts displayed by Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic when accessed in 2026. Tomatometer percentages and Metascores are separate systems, so compare seasons within each column rather than treating the figures as equivalent.
| Season | Episodes | Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer | Metacritic Metascore |
|---|---|---|---|
| Season 1 | 8 | 97% | 76 |
| Season 2 | 9 | 94% | 78 |
| Season 3 | 8 | 89% | 72 |
| Season 4 | 9 | 89% | 69 |
| Season 5 | 8 | 83% | 71 |
Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed season scores put Season 1 first and Season 5 last, while Metacritic places Season 2 first and Season 4 last. The figures are snapshots, not measures of universal audience preference. Netflix also reported that the Dustin-and-Suzie “Never Ending Story” duet from Season 3 ranked among its two most rewatched scenes at the time of its 2025 account. That, like the Season 4 scene ranking, is a platform-reported observation rather than an independent audience survey.
