Spoilers for all seven Scream films. Ghostface is a mask worn by different people, not a single killer with one consistent threat profile. This ranking covers the film franchise through Scream 7 (2026), including copycats and briefly revealed accomplices. It does not cover the television series.
“Scariest” here means the strongest overall threat on screen: menace during masked attacks, demonstrated brutality and effectiveness, psychological intimidation, unpredictability, reveal and performance impact, and the danger a killer leaves behind. Those factors are editorial judgments, not an official score. Partners are ranked individually, even when their shared plan or limited screen time makes it difficult to separate their contributions.
How the ranking treats the mask
A Ghostface reveal can make a character more surprising without making that character more frightening. The reverse is also true: a killer may be a compelling masked threat even if the explanation behind the mask is thin. This list weighs what each person does as well as what the reveal adds, rather than treating popularity, cleverness, or a high body count as a substitute for scariness.
It includes the people identified as Ghostface killers in the seven films, plus Jason and Greg from Scream VI. Jason is an opening-film copycat; Greg is a briefly revealed accomplice whose participation is largely established through the story rather than an extended performance. Their short evidence base matters: a mask alone does not give every character equal characterization or screen time. The television series is outside the scope.

The Ghostface killers, ranked
1. Billy Loomis — Scream (1996)
Billy takes the top spot because his threat operates both inside the mask and in plain sight. The film’s early attacks establish a killer who can turn an ordinary phone call into a controlled, intimate interrogation, then move quickly from taunting to violence. His relationship with Sidney lets him exploit trust as well as fear. Once revealed, his calm proximity to her makes the danger feel personal rather than merely anonymous.
The reveal also sharpens the film’s central uncertainty: the person who seems closest to the victim may be part of the danger. Billy’s menace is not just the costume or the knife; it is the contrast between the boyfriend Sidney thinks she knows and the person using her vulnerability against her. That combination of pursuit, manipulation, and lasting personal damage makes him the most frightening overall.
2. Mickey Altieri — Scream 2 (1997)
Mickey is terrifying because he treats murder as a performance and appears comfortable making violence part of a larger spectacle. The sequel’s campus setting gives him opportunities to exploit crowded public spaces as well as private encounters, and his reveal turns the movie’s attention to the way people consume violent stories. His showmanship makes him unpredictable: he is not simply trying to escape detection, but to make the crime mean something.
That theatrical motive adds psychological menace, though it can also make him feel more interested in the performance than in any one victim. He ranks below Billy because his connection to Sidney is less intimate, but his willingness to turn an attack into a public statement keeps him near the top.

Roman’s danger comes from planning and personal leverage. As the lone revealed killer in Scream 3, he has no partner to absorb suspicion or share the work, and his connection to Sidney gives the film’s final confrontation a family dimension. The Hollywood production setting lets him manipulate appearances and use the machinery of filmmaking to unsettle people who believe they know what a scene should look like.
His masked threat is strengthened by the scale of the scheme, but the explanation behind it is also the source of a limit: a carefully designed backstory is not the same as a frightening presence in every attack. Roman ranks high for the reach of his plan and the lasting impact of the reveal, though less for the immediate, intimate dread Billy creates.
4. Amber Freeman — Scream (2022)
Amber earns a high place because her reveal changes the temperature of the film. Before the mask comes off, the killer’s attacks are abrupt and physically forceful; afterward, Amber’s performance makes the shift from apparent vulnerability to aggression especially unnerving. She is frightening not because the movie asks the viewer to mistake her for the strongest person in the room, but because she can turn a familiar social setting into a sudden threat.

Her motive is bound up with fandom and grievance, which makes her violence feel like an attempt to impose her own version of the story. That gives the reveal thematic bite, but the scariness rests more on the ferocity and unpredictability of her attacks than on a deeply developed psychological portrait.
5. Mrs. Loomis — Scream 2 (1997)
Mrs. Loomis is disturbing because she turns grief into a deliberate campaign. The reveal reframes the killer’s pursuit of Sidney as a personal act of revenge, while her willingness to disguise herself and recruit another killer shows patience and calculation. She does not need to dominate every scene physically to feel dangerous; her ability to arrange the conditions of the threat is part of what makes her frightening.
Her impact is somewhat reduced by the fact that Mickey supplies much of the sequel’s overt showmanship. But her role as the architect of a revenge plan, and the coldness with which she puts it into motion, gives her a menace that outlasts the reveal.
6. Jill Roberts — Scream 4 (2011)
Jill’s scariness is rooted in the gap between the role she presents and the violence she is prepared to commit. Her motive turns attention toward fame and the desire to control how a victim’s story is told. That makes her reveal more than a surprise: it changes the meaning of the image she has been cultivating throughout the film.
She ranks here because the idea behind the character is chilling, and because her actions make clear that the apparent victim can be the person driving events. Her threat is more calculated than consistently overpowering, however, so she falls behind the killers whose masked pursuit feels more immediately relentless.
7. Wayne Bailey — Scream VI (2023)
Wayne’s position reflects the danger of a killer who can work through a family structure and a plan rather than relying on one disguise alone. His pursuit of Sam and Tara is tied to revenge, and the story gives him the authority and access to make that pursuit feel difficult to escape. He represents a more organized threat than a lone attacker improvising from scene to scene.
The revenge motive makes his actions understandable as a character’s grievance, not acceptable or less violent. His masked menace is strongest when the attack feels coordinated and the targets cannot easily tell who is involved. The reveal gives the plan shape, but it does not make him as psychologically intimate a threat as Billy.

8. Charlie Walker — Scream 4 (2011)
Charlie’s frightening quality is his willingness to make violence part of a remake-minded plan. He is useful to Jill because he can help carry out the attacks, but his own investment in the scheme makes him more than an interchangeable accomplice. The movie’s film-club and horror-fandom context gives his actions a self-conscious edge: he understands the conventions he is invoking, yet that knowledge does not make the danger safer or more predictable.
He ranks below Jill because the larger motive and story impact belong more clearly to her. As an individual masked threat, though, his participation in the planned attacks gives him a stronger case than a briefly revealed copycat or an accomplice with little on-screen characterization.

Jessica’s placement separates the impact of a reveal from the strength of the explanation behind it. Her motive is strange, and that oddness can make the character feel less psychologically credible than a killer whose grievance has been developed more fully. But Anna Camp’s performance after the reveal adds force and unpredictability, keeping Jessica from being dismissed as a weak threat simply because the motive is unusual.
She ranks in the middle rather than among the very top because the character’s post-reveal performance is a clearer source of menace than the motive itself. Scariness depends on what the killer does and how the actor sells the threat, not on whether the explanation is the most convincing one in the series.
10. Stu Macher — Scream (1996)
Stu’s unpredictability makes him unsettling. His reveal is accompanied by a volatile, erratic energy that contrasts with Billy’s more controlled manner. That instability helps the final stretch feel dangerous: the people holding Sidney are not operating with a single, calm plan, and the mood can shift without warning.
He ranks below Billy because his behavior is more chaotic than psychologically targeted. The volatility is memorable, but Billy is the more sustained personal threat to Sidney, while Stu’s strongest contribution to the scare factor is the way he destabilizes the final confrontation.

11. Ethan Landry — Scream VI (2023)
Ethan’s threat is shaped by concealment and the uncertainty around his role in the larger plan. His ordinary position among the people around Sam and Tara gives the eventual reveal its force: danger can be sitting inside the group rather than approaching from outside it. In a film with multiple killers, however, screen time and shared responsibility make his individual menace harder to isolate.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
He ranks below Wayne because the central planning and revenge drive are more strongly associated with Wayne. Ethan is a meaningful part of the threat, but the movie gives the group dynamic more weight than a singular, fully developed Ethan-centered pursuit.
12. Quinn Bailey — Scream VI (2023)
Quinn’s reveal plays on the danger of assuming that a victim has been removed from the story. That reversal is an effective source of shock and makes the viewer reconsider what the film has shown. Her presence also reinforces how the family’s plan depends on coordinated deception rather than one visible attacker.
The surprise has a stronger effect than the available characterization does. Quinn’s brief evidence as a masked threat makes it difficult to rank her alongside characters whose behavior and motives receive more sustained attention, so she lands in the lower half despite the reveal’s impact.
13. Marco — Scream 7 (2026)
Marco’s placement reflects a distinction between an implausibly developed threat and a genuinely frightening one. The masked identity may still create danger in the moment, but a character whose threat feels insufficiently credible loses some of the psychological pressure that makes a Ghostface effective. Scariness is not a reward for the scale of a plot; it depends on whether the person behind it feels like a convincing source of danger.
He ranks below Jessica because the latter’s post-reveal performance gives the threat a more distinct human presence. Marco’s case is a reminder that an elaborate role in a story does not automatically translate into stronger menace.
14. Karl Gibbs — Scream 7 (2026)
Karl is among the least frightening entries because he is barely characterized. A killer can be effective as a surprise or a function of the plot, but a thinly drawn person offers less material for psychological intimidation, unpredictability, or a lasting impression. That is a limitation in the evidence the character gives the audience, not a claim that a briefly characterized person could not be dangerous within the story.
He sits near the bottom because the ranking measures the threat the film makes legible, not an imagined version of the character with more scenes or a deeper motive.

15. Jason Carvey — Scream VI (2023)
Jason is a copycat who appears at the start of Scream VI, before the film’s central Ghostface plan takes shape. The opening establishes that people can adopt the mask and commit violence without being part of the main story’s ultimate killer group. That makes him useful to the film’s structure, but his limited time as an active threat leaves little room for a developed presence or a lasting psychological contest with the protagonists.
He is included because this ranking counts film copycats, not only the central masterminds. His short screen time places him low: an alarming opening does not provide the same sustained evidence of menace as a killer who pursues the main characters through the film.
16. Greg Bruckner — Scream VI (2023)
Greg is included as a briefly revealed accomplice, not treated as a fully developed, on-screen Ghostface performance. The film establishes his connection to the copycat plot, but gives him too little active presence for a meaningful comparison with the central killers. In rankings that reserve “Ghostface” for the main masked antagonists, excluding him is a reasonable scope choice; this broader film-only list counts him because it includes revealed accomplices.
That inclusion does not imply equal screen evidence. Greg ranks last because the story gives the audience the least opportunity to see how he behaves as a threat. A character’s involvement in a scheme and the scariness of that character’s on-screen portrayal are different questions.
Why rankings of Ghostface differ
There is no canonical scariness order. Critics can reasonably give different weight to a killer’s motive, brutality, planning, performance, or impact on the franchise. Scope changes the list, too: some film rankings exclude Jason and Greg as not being “proper” Ghostfaces, while this one includes them as copycats or accomplices. A television-inclusive ranking would be a different project and is not represented here.
The biggest judgment call is how to handle team status and limited screen time. A mastermind may feel threatening because the plan reaches beyond any one attack; a partner may be frightening in a scene but receive little independent characterization; an opening copycat may establish the film’s danger without remaining its central villain. Ranking them individually makes those differences visible rather than pretending each person has the same amount of evidence behind the mask.
Revisiting the films
For viewers who want to compare the performances and reveals directly, Paramount says its titles are distributed on DVD and Blu-ray through Paramount Home Entertainment. That general distribution information does not confirm that every Scream film, a particular edition, or a complete collection is listed in every market.
