The wider record includes attacks on a moon and a planet whose complete destruction is not confirmed in the official pages cited here, plus unnamed worlds damaged in Starkiller Base tests.
Which planets were definitely destroyed?
| Weapon | Named target | What the official account establishes |
|---|---|---|
| First Death Star | Alderaan | Grand Moff Tarkin used the superlaser to destroy the planet and kill its inhabitants. StarWars.com’s Alderaan entry describes its destruction. |
| Starkiller Base | Hosnian Prime | The weapon’s first shot obliterated the New Republic capital. The Starkiller Base Databank entry confirms the named target; the Hosnian Prime entry identifies the world. |
These are the straightforward answers to “Which planets did the Death Star destroy?” and “What planets did Starkiller Base destroy?” Other events are often grouped with them, but the available official wording does not establish the same planet-wide outcome in every case.
What else did the Death Star attack?
Jedha: a moon hit in the Death Star’s first test
Tarkin’s official biography calls the attack on Jedha the Death Star’s first test and describes the operation as the destruction of Jedha. However, StarWars.com identifies Jedha as a small desert moon, not a planet, and the pages cited here do not explicitly establish that the entire moon was destroyed. It is accurate to say the Death Star devastated or attacked Jedha; calling it a confirmed whole-moon destruction goes beyond those pages.
Scarif: a planet targeted during the battle
Tarkin’s biography says he next used the weapon at Scarif, and the Scarif entry identifies it as a planet and an Imperial installation. The cited pages do not explicitly say that the whole planet was destroyed. Scarif belongs in an account of Death Star targets, but not in the confirmed list of worlds blown up.

What planets did Starkiller Base destroy besides Hosnian Prime?
StarWars.com describes Starkiller Base’s attack as the destruction of the Hosnian system, and describes the weapon as capable of sterilizing worlds across a distant star system. The official pages cited here do not name any additional planets affected in that attack, so there is no basis for adding other named worlds to the list.
Before the attack, Starkiller Base’s tests cored planets in the Dassal system; an official StarWars.com lore feature says some were “virtually destroyed.” Those planets are unnamed in that account, and “cored” or “virtually destroyed” is not the same wording as confirmed total destruction. They count as unnamed test victims in the broader record, not as identifiable planets to add by name.

What should not be counted as a planet blown up by its own weapon?
- Starkiller Base: It was a planet converted into a First Order superweapon and was later destroyed by the Resistance. It was not a target planet destroyed by its own beam. The Databank entry and its account of the base’s destruction distinguish those events.
- The first Death Star: The Death Star was a moon-sized space station. Its destruction at Yavin is separate from the planets it attacked. StarWars.com’s Death Star entry describes the station.
Why the wording matters
Official accounts use different terms for different outcomes: Alderaan was destroyed, Hosnian Prime was obliterated, the Dassal test planets were cored and described as virtually destroyed, and the Hosnian attack is also described at the system level. Those phrases should not be treated as interchangeable. The official pages cited here establish two named planets as definite planet-wide destructions: Alderaan and Hosnian Prime.
