Each movie reveals a different person—or group—as the killer, while Roger L. Jackson supplies the recurring phone voice. The performers inside the costume are a separate category, and the available credits do not support a complete film-by-film list of every masked performer.
That distinction explains why answers to “Who played Ghostface?” can name different people without contradicting one another. The film-by-film list below identifies the characters revealed as killers and the actors portraying them. It also notes Jackson’s voice role, and marks where available evidence does not establish a killer’s identity.

Who played Ghostface in each Scream movie?
The names below identify the people revealed as Ghostface killers in the story and the actors who portray them. They are not a roster of everyone who wore the mask during filming. The voice column answers a third question: who performed Ghostface’s calls over the phone?

For the first six films, the killer roster is documented in the film-character overview and cast-credit sources. The official film pages provide context for the newer installments: Paramount’s Scream (2022) page, Paramount’s Scream VI page, and Paramount’s Scream 7 page. The broader series runs from the 1996 original through Scream 7; Amazon’s franchise guide covers the films through Scream VI.

Read across a row to keep the roles straight: the killer column names story characters, the actor column names the people playing those characters, and the voice column identifies the recurring phone performer. The pattern is not “one Ghostface actor per movie.” A film can reveal more than one killer, and the same voice performer can remain associated with Ghostface while the killers change.
Why “played Ghostface” can mean three different things
The killer revealed in the story
These are the characters listed in the table: the people whose identities are disclosed as the killers. The role changes from film to film, and a single installment can reveal multiple killers. Billy and Stu are the original film’s two killers; later entries replace them with new characters rather than continuing one actor’s performance as Ghostface.
This is usually what a reader wants when asking which actor played Ghostface: the actor whose character is ultimately revealed. By that definition, the original answer is both Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard, not just one of them. The same multi-killer pattern appears in Scream 2, Scream 4, Scream (2022), and Scream VI. Scream 3 has one revealed killer in this roster, Roman Bridger.
The voice on the phone
Roger L. Jackson is the recurring phone voice associated with Ghostface. The original film’s credits identify him as the phone voice, and later cast listings continue to credit him as Ghostface’s voice. The consistency of that voice can make the character seem continuous even as the person behind the mask changes.
So if “Who voices Ghostface?” is the question, the concise answer is Jackson. If the question is which actors played the revealed killers, the answer changes with each movie. Those are related credits, but they describe different work; naming Jackson alone does not identify the people revealed as killers.
The performer in the costume
A masked-body performer may wear the costume for a shot or sequence, independently of the actor who plays the revealed killer. The 1996 credits include Lee Waddell under a Ghostface credit as well as separate stunt and performer credits. Those credits illustrate the distinction, but they do not establish a complete, reconciled list of every person who wore the costume in every film.
That means a cast list or costume credit should not automatically be read as the answer to who is revealed as Ghostface. Conversely, an actor listed as a killer character should not automatically be credited as the person physically in the mask for every scene. The credits and cast listings support the categories and some specific credits, not a scene-by-scene assignment of masked appearances.
What the original credits tell us about Ghostface
In the 1996 film, the story’s killers are Billy Loomis, played by Skeet Ulrich, and Stu Macher, played by Matthew Lillard. Roger L. Jackson voices the calls, while the credits separately include a Ghostface performer credit for Lee Waddell. These are different contributions to the same on-screen figure, not conflicting answers to who “played” Ghostface.
That separation matters when reading cast lists. A credit for the killer character points to the actor portraying that person; a voice credit identifies the performer heard over the phone; and a costume or stunt credit concerns physical work in the mask. One credit cannot automatically stand in for the others. The original credits are a useful concrete example of why a single-name answer can be incomplete even when the source is accurate.
Waddell’s specific credit is also not evidence that he wore the costume throughout all of the films. The credits do not provide a full, reconciled roster of mask performers across the franchise, and later search results or secondary accounts are incomplete or inconsistent. It is more accurate to state the confirmed credit and the limit of what it establishes than to extrapolate it to other movies.
How to read the later reveals
Scream 2 through Scream 4
Scream 2 reveals Mickey Altieri, played by Timothy Olyphant, and Nancy Loomis, played by Laurie Metcalf and using the name Debbie Salt. The table uses Nancy Loomis as the character identity and includes Debbie Salt because that is the name she uses. This is a useful distinction between a killer’s identity and an alias, rather than two separate killers.
Scream 3 centers its reveal on Roman Bridger, portrayed by Scott Foley. Scream 4 reveals Jill Roberts, played by Emma Roberts, and Charlie Walker, played by Rory Culkin. Jackson is credited as the phone voice in these installments as well. The series therefore moves from a paired reveal in the second film to one named killer in the third and another pair in the fourth.

Scream (2022)
The 2022 film reveals Amber Freeman, portrayed by Mikey Madison, and Richie Kirsch, portrayed by Jack Quaid. Paramount’s official film page and cast listings provide context for the film and its performers; the killer identities and voice credit are also reflected in the franchise character and credit sources.
Because the film is also titled Scream, include the year when distinguishing it from the 1996 original. In a film list, “Scream (1996)” and “Scream (2022)” are clearer than either title by itself. Both entries have two revealed killers, but they are different characters portrayed by different actors.
Scream VI
The final reveal in Scream VI involves three killers: Wayne Bailey (Dermot Mulroney), Quinn Bailey (Liana Liberato), and Ethan Landry (Jack Champion). Do not confuse them with Jason Carvey, played by Tony Revolori, and Greg Bruckner, who are early would-be Ghostface killers. The film’s final killer reveal is the trio in the table, not Jason and Greg.
This is the installment where the distinction between an early apparent or would-be killer and the final revealed roster is especially important. Jason and Greg belong in an explanation of the setup, but not as replacements for Wayne, Quinn, and Ethan in the final answer to who the film reveals as Ghostface. Jackson remains the voice performer listed for the film.
Scream 7
Paramount’s official synopsis confirms a new Ghostface threat, and cast listings identify Roger L. Jackson as the voice. The sources cited here do not adequately establish the in-story killer’s identity, so it would be misleading to name a culprit as a settled reveal.
The careful answer for this entry is therefore limited: the film has a Ghostface threat, and Jackson is listed as the voice performer, but the cited sources do not support naming the person behind the mask. Do not turn a cast listing, speculation, or an unverified secondary account into a confirmed reveal. The table leaves that character and actor unspecified rather than treating an unsupported guess as fact.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why there is no complete masked-performer list
Credits and secondary accounts do not provide a consistent, complete roster of every person who wore the costume across all installments. Some sources identify isolated performers, but that is not enough to assign every masked appearance to a named actor or stunt performer. The character’s physical presence can also involve more than one performer within a film, which makes a single-name answer especially unreliable.
For an accurate answer, keep the categories separate: the table gives the revealed killer characters and their actors; Jackson is the recurring voice; and a complete costume-performer roster is not established by the cited credits. The original-film credit for Waddell is a specific credit, not evidence that the same performer wore the mask throughout the series.
Rank #3
If you are checking another source, first ask what its name refers to: a character reveal, a voice credit, or physical work in the costume. Then compare the claim with the appropriate film credits or reliable cast information. A list that gives one name without saying which role it means may be answering a different version of the question, rather than disproving the film-by-film list here.
Sources and scope
The film-by-film reveal list draws on the franchise character overview and cast-credit listings. Official Paramount pages establish premises and cast context for the 2022 film, Scream VI, and Scream 7. The available evidence supports the revealed killer roster through Scream VI and Jackson’s recurring voice role; it does not support guessing either a comprehensive masked-body roster or the Scream 7 killer identity.
The theatrical series discussed here extends from the original Scream (1996) through Scream 7 (2026). Amazon’s guide covers the franchise through Scream VI, while Paramount’s pages provide official context for the later films. The sources reviewed do not supply a useful named statistic or verified quotation for this answer, so neither is needed to explain the cast distinctions.
If the goal is to revisit the reveals and compare the phone performances, a physical Scream film collection on Blu-ray or DVD is one relevant option. Specific editions and current availability have not been verified, so check the exact listing before choosing or linking to a release. No price or edition recommendation is asserted here.

Were Jason and Greg the final Ghostface killers in Scream VI?
No. Jason Carvey (Tony Revolori) and Greg Bruckner are early would-be killers. The final revealed trio is Wayne Bailey, Quinn Bailey, and Ethan Landry.
Who is Ghostface in Scream 7?
The official synopsis confirms a new Ghostface threat, and cast listings identify Roger L. Jackson as the voice performer. The sources cited here do not adequately establish the in-story killer’s identity, so no culprit is named.
The Bottom Line
Ghostface is a changing killer identity, not a single character actor across the series. The revealed killers and their actors vary by film, while Roger L. Jackson is the recurring phone voice. The costume performer is a separate credit category, and the available evidence does not justify a complete masked-performer list or naming Scream 7’s killer.
