Paul Thomas Anderson’s ten feature films range from a hushed casino character study to a sprawling political revolt. This ranking puts Inherent Vice last and There Will Be Blood first—not because one film is objectively “best,” but because the top choice combines a commanding central performance, formal control and thematic force with unusual staying power. Rotten Tomatoes’ September 26, 2025 Tomatometer snapshot put One Battle After Another first among Anderson’s films, while the Los Angeles Times published a different subjective order. Those contrasts are a reminder that a critic aggregate and a personal ranking answer different questions.

Paul Thomas Anderson movies, ranked

The list below weighs how well each film’s storytelling, performances, tone and craft work together. The Tomatometer figures are Rotten Tomatoes’ snapshot as of September 26, 2025; they reflect the share of counted critics who reviewed a film positively, not a score for artistic quality, and can change as reviews are added.

Rank Film Year Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, Sept. 26, 2025
10 Inherent Vice 2014 73%
9 Hard Eight 1996 82%
8 Licorice Pizza 2021 90%
7 Magnolia 1999 82%
6 The Master 2012 85%
5 Punch-Drunk Love 2002 79%
4 One Battle After Another 2025 94%
3 Phantom Thread 2017 91%
2 Boogie Nights 1997 91%
1 There Will Be Blood 2007 91%

10. Inherent Vice (2014)

Anderson’s Thomas Pynchon adaptation is a sun-dazed noir puzzle in which private investigator Doc Sportello drifts through a Los Angeles conspiracy. Its loose, paranoid mood is the point: clues, characters and motives arrive in a haze that resembles Doc’s own experience. That makes the film unusually immersive when its languor clicks, but the mystery can feel less like a puzzle being solved than one being continually obscured. It is Anderson at his zaniest and most melancholic, and the least welcoming starting point for a newcomer.

9. Hard Eight (1996)

Anderson’s feature debut is a compact crime story about casino gamblers, built around Philip Baker Hall’s quietly authoritative presence. Its modest scale and patient attention to people give it a tenderness that the director’s later, larger canvases rarely make room for. The limitation is also its distinction: the film has less range and formal ambition than what followed, and its controlled character study can seem slight beside Anderson’s more fully realized work. It remains a strong debut, especially for the ensemble acting and the care with which it observes lives shaped by chance.

8. Licorice Pizza (2021)

Set in the San Fernando Valley in 1973, this episodic coming-of-age story follows Gary Valentine and Alana Kane through a series of encounters that feel more like remembered summer episodes than steps in a tightly plotted arc. The film’s freewheeling lightness is a genuine change of gear for Anderson, and its lived-in period atmosphere gives the detours their appeal. But the looseness can leave its central relationship feeling less developed than the surrounding texture. That split helps explain why the Los Angeles Times placed it last in its own 2025 ranking even as Rotten Tomatoes’ snapshot placed it fifth by Tomatometer.

7. Magnolia (1999)

Across one day, an ensemble of people orbiting a television quiz show collide with old wounds, regrets and the possibility of forgiveness. Magnolia is among Anderson’s most ambitious early films: its interwoven structure and emotional intensity aim for a sense of collective crisis rather than a single protagonist’s story. Its force comes from taking those feelings seriously, but the same expansiveness can tip into overstatement. The film’s scale is exhilarating when its strands converge and harder to sustain when every moment presses toward maximum significance.

6. The Master (2012)

The bond between Freddie Quell, a damaged World War II veteran, and Lancaster Dodd, the charismatic leader of a movement, gives this film its uneasy center. Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman play off one another with a volatility that keeps the relationship at once magnetic and threatening. The fluid photography and Jonny Greenwood’s score deepen the sense that the film is always shifting underfoot. It draws on the life of L. Ron Hubbard, but it is not simply an exposé of Scientology: Anderson follows the strange, unstable connection between two men on its own terms. The result is richly acted and formally assured, though its refusal to settle into a clear explanation can make it a demanding watch.

5. Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

Anderson turns a romantic comedy into a nervy, funny story about loneliness, anger and the hope of being understood. Adam Sandler’s Barry Egan is a volatile, isolated man whose connection with Lena gives the film a tender counterweight to its bursts of anxiety. The heightened colors, sound and magical-realist touches make Barry’s inner life feel like the film’s actual landscape. Its compact focus sets it apart from Anderson’s larger ensembles, and its oddness is not an obstacle to the romance but the means by which the romance becomes convincing.

4. One Battle After Another (2025)

Anderson’s tenth feature expands his canvas to a story of revolt and race relations in the wake of the Great Recession. The film’s scale and political concerns make it a different kind of achievement from his close-up character studies, while Rotten Tomatoes’ 2025 snapshot praised its combination of entertainment and thematic richness. Its fourth-place position here reflects a judgment about the full body of work, not a dismissal of its reach. The Associated Press reported that it won six Oscars at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, including best picture, directing and adapted screenplay; those awards came after the September 2025 rankings and Tomatometer snapshot.

3. Phantom Thread (2017)

In 1950s London, a celebrated fashion designer and the woman who enters his carefully managed world turn courtship into a darkly comic contest of wills. The film’s haute-couture setting could have been mere ornament, but Anderson makes precision itself dramatic: habits, meals and silences become part of the romantic tension. Daniel Day-Lewis anchors the controlled surface, while the relationship’s discord gives that surface a sly, unsettling humor. It is quieter than Anderson’s grander films, but its exactness makes every change in power count.

2. Boogie Nights (1997)

This rise-and-fall ensemble drama follows a community in the San Fernando Valley’s 1970s adult-film industry. The pop soundtrack and multi-character structure create an irresistible forward motion, but propulsion alone is not the achievement: Anderson grants the people in this world enough warmth and vulnerability to make their triumphs, compromises and collapses matter. Its period energy and emotional breadth make it one of his most accessible films without flattening the lives it depicts. The result is a vivid portrait of a chosen family whose members cannot always protect one another from the changes around them.

1. There Will Be Blood (2007)

Daniel Plainview’s rise as a prospector and oilman becomes a severe study of ambition, commerce, family and religion. The film’s long-form structure gives that portrait room to harden, and Robert Elswit’s cinematography and Jonny Greenwood’s score make the landscape and its unease feel inseparable from Plainview’s pursuit of power. Daniel Day-Lewis’s performance is a towering center, but the film’s achievement is larger than its lead: its formal control makes the conflict between material wealth and spiritual authority feel both intimate and monumental. It is the strongest meeting of Anderson’s character work, visual command and thematic ambition, and the best place to begin with his filmography.

Where to start with Paul Thomas Anderson

  • For an American epic: Start with There Will Be Blood, a concentrated entry into Anderson’s ambition, formal control and central performances.
  • For an energetic ensemble: Choose Boogie Nights, with its propulsive structure and interlocking lives.
  • For a romantic-comic departure: Try Punch-Drunk Love, which turns anxiety and loneliness into an unusually tender love story.
  • For an opaque noir puzzle: Save Inherent Vice for when you are ready to let atmosphere matter as much as plot; its density makes it a less obvious first film.

There is no single settled order for Anderson’s films. Rotten Tomatoes’ September 2025 critic aggregate and the Los Angeles Times’ subjective ranking put different titles in different positions; the gap between them is a useful reminder that a ranking depends on what a viewer values, from narrative clarity to risk-taking and emotional scale.
