The 2024 Times Square Ball Drop happened at midnight Eastern Time on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, welcoming 2025. The best free way to watch the ceremony itself was the official commercial-free Times Square webcast. ABC, CNN, and CBS offered different television experiences, while an antenna or live-TV service could provide access to local broadcast affiliates without traditional cable.
The short answer
The main Times Square Ball Drop took place at midnight Eastern Time on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, welcoming Wednesday, January 1, 2025. The best free way to watch the actual ceremony was the official, commercial-free Times Square webcast from the Times Square Alliance and its event partners.
For television viewers, the main choices were ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2025, CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live, and CBS’s country-music special, New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash. ABC included the Times Square countdown in a music-and-celebrity broadcast; CNN moved through celebrations around the world before returning to New York; CBS focused on Nashville rather than providing an uninterrupted Times Square feed.
Where to watch the 2024 Times Square Ball Drop
| Option | Best for | What it showed | How to access it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official Times Square webcast | The actual ceremony without cable | Performances, hourly countdowns, the Ball lighting and raising, and the midnight Ball Drop | TimesSquareNYC.org, TimesSquareBall.net, and the event’s official webcast pages |
| ABC: Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve | Music, celebrities, and the New York countdown | Live entertainment from Times Square and other locations, including the Ball Drop | Local ABC station, an antenna, or a live-TV service carrying the local ABC affiliate; next-day Hulu catch-up was also reported |
| CNN: New Year’s Eve Live | Celebrations across multiple time zones | Live coverage from cities around the world, ending with Times Square | CNN through a television provider or authenticated live-TV service |
| CBS: Nashville’s Big Bash | Country-music performances | A Nashville-centered New Year’s Eve concert broadcast | Local CBS station or Paramount+ as listed in the 2024 schedule |
| NBC: A Toast to 2024 | A retrospective holiday special | A two-hour entertainment and year-in-review program | NBC’s broadcast schedule; it was not the principal continuous Times Square Ball Drop feed |
1. The official free Times Square webcast
If the goal was to watch the New York ceremony itself, rather than a network program that included it, the official webcast was the clearest choice. The 2024 event materials described the stream as live and commercial-free, with event performances, the lighting and raising of the New Year’s Eve Ball, hourly countdowns, and the midnight Ball Drop.

The webcast was produced through the Times Square event organization and its partners, including the Times Square Alliance, Countdown Entertainment, and One Times Square. The event’s official viewing information directed audiences to TimesSquareNYC.org and TimesSquareBall.net.
This was a better fit than a network broadcast for viewers who wanted:
- the Ball Drop without a cable or pay-TV subscription;
- the Times Square event rather than a studio-heavy entertainment show;
- the ceremony’s official production and event timing;
- a stream that did not depend on receiving a local ABC, CBS, or NBC affiliate.
Because this guide concerns the December 31, 2024 event, a past player or archive should not be assumed to remain active. If you are using this page as a historical reference, the official Times Square sites are the appropriate places to check for any surviving event material.
2. ABC: Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2025
ABC’s major general-entertainment broadcast began at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. Ryan Seacrest and Rita Ora were in Times Square, while the program also carried performances and segments from other locations.
ABC was the strongest network choice for viewers who wanted a conventional New Year’s Eve television special with a large music lineup, celebrity appearances, and the New York countdown. It did include the Times Square Ball Drop, but it was not the same thing as the official event webcast: much of the program consisted of entertainment and remote coverage.
Ways to watch ABC without cable
- Over the air: Use an antenna to receive the local ABC affiliate if one is available at your address.
- Live-TV streaming: Use a service that carries your local ABC station. Local-channel lineups vary by market, so check the provider’s ZIP-code lookup before subscribing.
- Catch-up viewing: Contemporaneous viewing guidance reported next-day availability on Hulu. That was a replay option, not a simultaneous live stream.
If you need local ABC, CBS, or NBC without a pay-TV subscription, an over-the-air TV antenna can be a practical solution. Reception depends on your location, the station’s signal, terrain, building materials, and whether the local affiliate broadcasts on a VHF or UHF channel. An antenna will not provide CNN or the internet-based official Times Square webcast.

3. CNN: New Year’s Eve Live
CNN was the best option for viewers who wanted to watch New Year’s Eve unfold internationally. Its coverage moved through celebrations and countdowns in cities including Sydney, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Doha, London, Berlin, Warsaw, and New York.
The broadcast culminated in Times Square with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen. Unlike a single-event webcast, CNN’s format followed the world’s midnight celebrations as they arrived in sequence, making it useful for viewers who wanted several hours of international coverage before the New York Ball Drop.
Recommended Free Tools
The full CNN television feed generally required a CNN subscription through a television provider or an authenticated live-TV service. CNN should therefore be described as a network and live-TV option, not as a universally free stream. Provider carriage and digital access can vary by market, and an archived transcript or event page does not necessarily mean that a full on-demand video remains available.
4. CBS: New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash
CBS aired New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash in two scheduled parts: 8:00–10:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.–1:30 a.m. Eastern and Pacific, according to the network’s 2024 press schedule. The program was also listed as available on Paramount+.
This was the natural choice for country-music fans. It was built around Nashville’s performances and celebration, however, rather than around a continuous Times Square broadcast. If your priority was specifically the New York Ball Drop, the official Times Square webcast or ABC was more direct. Viewers choosing CBS should confirm how the relevant late-night portion was presented in their local feed.
5. NBC: A Toast to 2024
NBC promoted A Toast to 2024, hosted by Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, as a two-hour primetime New Year’s Eve special. It was a retrospective and entertainment program with guests and performances.

NBC was not the principal live Times Square Ball Drop destination for the 2024–25 celebration. It should not be grouped with ABC and CNN as though it carried the same continuous live New York countdown. NBC viewers who wanted the actual Ball Drop needed to use the official Times Square webcast, ABC, CNN, or another confirmed local broadcast or livestream.
Local-news and YouTube streams
Two network-owned local outlets preserved evidence of Times Square livestreams on YouTube for December 31, 2024:
- CBS New York published a live Times Square Ball Drop stream.
- NBC New York published a live Times Square Ball Drop stream welcoming 2025.
These were useful local-news and archival alternatives, but they should be treated as outlet-specific streams. A YouTube event URL may no longer be live after the celebration, and one affiliate’s distribution arrangement does not prove that every affiliate or every market used the same stream.
The official Times Square webcast remained the preferred free-stream recommendation because it was expressly created as the event’s commercial-free global webcast.

Choose the official webcast if you only need Times Square
Use the official webcast when you want the Ball Drop ceremony and do not need a network’s performances, commentary, or international segments. This was the simplest no-cable path for the 2024 event.
Use an antenna for local broadcast networks
A digital TV antenna can receive a local ABC, CBS, NBC, or other broadcast affiliate without a pay-TV subscription, provided the station’s signal reaches your location. The FCC’s consumer guidance explains that over-the-air television requires an antenna and digital television equipment, with reception dependent on geography and signal conditions.

Before relying on an antenna, check which stations are available in your ZIP code and test reception at the television’s final location. An indoor antenna may work well in a strong-signal area but may be unreliable in a basement, behind dense walls, or far from the transmitter.
Use a live-TV streaming service for local stations or CNN
A live-TV streaming service can be useful if you need a local ABC or CBS affiliate, or if you want CNN, but the service must carry the relevant channel in your market. Availability, pricing, authentication, and local-station carriage change over time. Do not subscribe based only on a national channel list: enter your ZIP code and verify the exact affiliate first.

If your television does not support the required app, an HDMI streaming device can provide access to compatible services. The device itself does not supply ABC, CBS, CNN, or the Times Square webcast; you still need a supported app, an internet connection, and—where applicable—a subscription or television-provider login.
Use next-day catch-up for ABC
If you missed ABC’s live broadcast, next-day Hulu availability was reported for the 2024 special. That option was useful for replaying the entertainment program, but it was not a live replacement for watching the Ball Drop at midnight Eastern Time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What time was the Ball Drop?
The Ball dropped at 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time as December 31, 2024, ended and January 1, 2025, began. That was:
- 9:00 p.m. Pacific Time on December 31;
- 10:00 p.m. Mountain Time on December 31;
- 11:00 p.m. Central Time on December 31;
- midnight Eastern Time at the transition into January 1.
A national broadcast could show the New York countdown before the viewer’s own local midnight. Do not assume that every network repeated the Times Square Ball Drop live at every U.S. time zone. Viewers seeking a countdown synchronized to their own local midnight needed a local event or a service explicitly offering a time-zone-specific feed.

CNN’s rolling international format was particularly useful for time-zone viewing because it followed celebrations as midnight moved westward around the world. It still culminated in New York at Eastern Time rather than automatically providing a separate local countdown for every U.S. market.
Which stream was best?

Important date and availability notes
- The event happened on December 31, 2024, and welcomed 2025. It was not a January 1, 2024 countdown.

- Local ABC, CBS, and NBC reception depends on geography and signal conditions.
- Live-TV streaming-service lineups and network authentication rules vary by market and can change.
- A historical YouTube stream or network page may not remain available after the event.
- NBC’s A Toast to 2024 was an entertainment retrospective, not the main continuous live Times Square broadcast.
