Scene-by-scene interpretations also point to Ginger Snaps, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, The Addams Family Values, Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A few other possible echoes are less certain, so they are best treated as readings rather than confirmed references.
Death Becomes Her is the video’s central reported inspiration
The clearest through-line is the 1992 dark comedy Death Becomes Her: two women battle over a man, endure apparently fatal violence and return in increasingly damaged states. The shotgun attack and the hole through Sabrina Carpenter’s torso are especially direct visual parallels, while the funeral outfits reinforce the connection. TheWrap’s scene-by-scene guide and W Magazine’s coverage identify the film as the likely favorite Carpenter referred to when she said the video was inspired by one of her favorite films. She did not name the film in that quoted statement, so Death Becomes Her is the strongest reported identification, not a title Carpenter explicitly confirmed in the quote.

W Magazine also reproduces Carpenter saying, “I think it’s my favorite one I’ve ever done,” about the video. The distinctive mix of lethal rivalry, macabre comedy and glamorous funeral styling makes the Death Becomes Her comparison the most substantial one in the coverage.
Other movie references identified in scene-by-scene coverage
TheWrap’s guide connects several individual moments and character looks to earlier films. These are reported visual parallels, not a list of references confirmed by Carpenter or director Dave Meyers.
#1 Best Overall
- Short n' Sweet showcases the scintillating spirit of Sabrina Carpenter, the pocket-sized popstar with a larger-than-life artistic presence
Ginger Snaps (2000)
The fence impalement is compared with a scene in this Canadian coming-of-age werewolf film. TheWrap describes it as a deeper-cut reference.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Jenna Ortega’s nurse outfit and red-cross eye patch evoke Elle Driver, the nurse played by Daryl Hannah in Quentin Tarantino’s film. TheWrap describes the styling as a cosplay-like reference.

The Addams Family Values (1993)
TheWrap also connects Ortega’s styling to Debbie Jelinsky, Joan Cusack’s character in the dark comedy. This is a character-and-costume comparison rather than a plot parallel.
Psycho (1960)
The shower sequence is described as an extended nod to Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller. The connection rests on the staged shower scene, not simply on the video’s broader horror tone.
Rank #3
- Short n' Sweet showcases the scintillating spirit of Sabrina Carpenter, the pocket-sized popstar with a larger-than-life artistic presence
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
TheWrap points to the lighting and lens flares around the chainsaw scene. The chainsaw by itself is not presented as proof of a reference; the visual treatment is part of the comparison.
Possible references that should be treated as interpretations
Scream 4 (2011)
TheWrap suggests that the defibrillator kill could evoke Scream 4. Its wording is explicitly tentative, so this belongs in the possible-reference category rather than among the stronger parallels.

Pulp Fiction (1994)
TheWrap says the video’s credit fonts appear inspired by the opening credits of Pulp Fiction. “Appear inspired” is the appropriate level of certainty; the typography connection is an interpretation.
Jennifer’s Body (2009)
Dexerto offers Jennifer’s Body as a possible reading of the kiss. TheWrap does not include it in its seven-film list, making this an additional interpretation reported by one outlet rather than a broadly shared or confirmed reference. Dexerto’s reference guide discusses that possibility.

One opening detail refers to another Carpenter video, not a movie
The teddy bear shown at the beginning wears duct tape marked with kiss prints, resembling Barry Keoghan’s look at the end of Carpenter’s “Please, Please, Please” video. TheWrap identifies this as a callback to her own music-video imagery, not a film reference.
How to read the reference list
The scene breakdowns are entertainment-journalism interpretations, not an official production inventory of intended references. Death Becomes Her is the strongest reported inspiration; the other titles vary in how clearly the visual similarities are framed. The guides were published in August 2024, and their lists should be understood as reported readings of the video rather than an exhaustive, officially confirmed canon.
