The only population figure established in the official material covered here is the Commonwealth’s approximately 50,000 members, a figure AMC reported in 2020 while discussing the comic-series context. AMC describes the histories and roles of the Prison, Woodbury, Alexandria, Hilltop, the Kingdom, Oceanside, the Saviors’ Sanctuary network and the Scavengers, but does not provide comparable headcounts for them. These are the major communities in AMC’s television universe, not a census of every settlement or temporary camp.
Walking Dead communities and the population evidence
The figures below distinguish an attributable population count from a settlement’s role and history. “Not established” means the official material cited here does not give a headcount; it does not mean the community had no residents. Because people died, moved, joined other settlements or were displaced, a count without a specific point in the story would also risk implying a stable population where none existed.
| Community | What AMC’s overview establishes | Population evidence |
|---|---|---|
| West Georgia Correctional Facility (the Prison) | Rick’s group tries to make it a home; it is an important stage in their community-building and eventually falls. | No official headcount established in the sources cited here. |
| Woodbury | The first developed permanent settlement the survivors encounter in AMC’s overview. | No official headcount established in the sources cited here. |
| Alexandria | A developed community with power and rules, initially presented as a comparatively functioning society. | No official headcount established in the sources cited here. |
| Hilltop | A walled refuge associated with Maggie, Jesus and Tara; the Whisperers later destroy it. | No official headcount established in the sources cited here. |
| The Kingdom | A long-lived settlement with social organization and martial capacity; its residents eventually abandon it after deterioration, fire and severe winter conditions. | No official headcount established in the sources cited here. |
| Oceanside | A secluded seaside community whose history is shaped by the killing of its men; it later becomes part of the Coalition. | No official headcount established in the sources cited here. |
| The Saviors and the Sanctuary | A network centered on the Sanctuary, with outposts and communities compelled to provide tribute. | No single stable population established; the source describes a network, not one settlement with a fixed count. |
| The Scavengers (the Heaps) | A community at the Heaps with a distinct scavenging-based identity. | No official headcount established in the sources cited here. |
| The Commonwealth | A bloc of communities with advanced technology, military capacity and settlements across geographic areas. | Approximately 50,000 members, according to AMC in 2020, in a discussion framed around the comic series. |
Community descriptions and trajectories come from AMC’s overview of Walking Dead communities. It is not a population ledger. The Commonwealth figure comes from AMC’s 2020 Commonwealth explainer; treat it as AMC’s approximate figure for the Commonwealth bloc in its comics discussion, not as a precise census of the television settlement at every point in the story.
How many people lived in Alexandria?
The official sources cited here do not establish an exact population for Alexandria. AMC describes its infrastructure and rules, which show that it functions as an organized settlement, but neither those details nor the number of people visible in a scene supplies a canon headcount.

How many people were in Hilltop, the Kingdom or Oceanside?
No comparable official population totals are established for Hilltop, the Kingdom or Oceanside in the sources cited here. Their documented differences are more useful than speculative rankings: Hilltop is a walled refuge, the Kingdom has organized leadership and martial capacity, and Oceanside is a secluded seaside settlement. Their fortunes change over time, so apparent size in one scene should not be treated as a permanent count.
AMC’s Season 8 material confirms an alliance among Alexandria, Hilltop and the Kingdom. That establishes cooperation, not their individual or combined population.

Why the Commonwealth is the one community with a reported number
AMC reported approximately 50,000 members for the Commonwealth in 2020. Its explainer presents the Commonwealth as a bloc of communities and discusses it in the context of Robert Kirkman’s comic series. The number is therefore best described as AMC’s approximate reported figure, with that context attached—not as an exact, timeless count for every screen version or moment.
Why scene size and extra counts are not population counts
A crowd shown on screen can suggest scale, but it cannot establish how many people live in a community. Productions may use background performers to represent a larger population, and fan-maintained background-survivor material cautions that extras are not equivalent to official population totals. The fan-maintained background-survivor page is useful only for that distinction; it is not an authoritative census.

What can be compared reliably
For most of these communities, the available evidence supports comparison by social character and history, not by population rank. The Prison is where Rick’s group attempts to build a home; Woodbury is an early permanent settlement; Alexandria has infrastructure and rules; Hilltop is a walled refuge; the Kingdom is organized and defended; Oceanside is secluded; the Saviors operate a tribute-based network; and the Scavengers are identified with salvage. The Commonwealth stands apart in the available population evidence because AMC attached an approximate figure to its broader bloc.
These distinctions describe communities at different stages of a changing story. Deaths, migration, destruction, absorption of refugees and relocation can alter who lives where, so even a valid count needs a time and a clearly defined settlement to be meaningful.
