The church reunion is an afterlife gathering of people who died at different times—not proof that everyone died in the crash or was dead throughout the series.
What happened to the main characters on the island?
The finale sorts the central characters into three outcomes: some die on the island, some leave, and Hurley and Ben remain. It does not show what most of them do afterward.

Jack dies after restoring the island’s light
Jack returns the stone to the spring, restoring the island’s light. Mortally injured, he makes his way to the bamboo grove, where he dies with Vincent beside him. Before that, he sends Desmond out of the cave.
Kate, Sawyer, and Claire escape
Kate Austen, James “Sawyer” Ford, and Claire Littleton leave the island on the Ajira plane. Miles, Frank Lapidus, and Richard are aboard as well. The finale does not show what becomes of the group after departure.
#1 Best Overall
Hurley becomes protector, and Ben stays
Hugo “Hurley” Reyes accepts the role of island protector, and Benjamin Linus stays to help him. ABC’s finale recap also places Desmond with Hurley and Ben on the island at the close. The episode gives no detailed account of Desmond’s later life.
Characters who died before the finale
Sun, Jin, Sayid, Shannon, and Boone had died before Jack. They appear in the church reunion rather than leaving on the Ajira plane.

What does the church reunion mean?
The last season’s flash-sideways storyline leads to a reunion after the characters’ lives have ended. Christian explains that they died at different times and came together to move on. The church is not a scene from the island’s timeline, and it does not mean the survivors were dead from the moment of the crash.
This distinction explains why Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley appear at the reunion even though the finale shows them alive when they leave the island or remain there. Their reunion takes place after their respective lives, whose later details the series largely leaves out.

What remains unknown at the end of Lost?
The finale gives emotional closure to the characters’ shared journey, but it does not provide a complete account of their futures or answer every mystery. It leaves these outcomes unstated:
Rank #4
- How long Hurley protects the island or when he eventually dies.
- What happens to Kate, Sawyer, Claire, Miles, Frank, and Richard after the Ajira plane departs.
- When each person at the church died; the reunion includes people whose deaths occurred at different points, but it is not a full death chronology.
In a 2010 ABC News interview, executive producer Carlton Cuse described the ending as an effort to be “kind of spiritual” and to capture what the people who made the show felt as a community: ABC News interview with the producers. In a 2020 retrospective, co-creator Damon Lindelof said he wanted to address what happens after death, while Cuse discussed the decision not to turn the finale into a checklist of every mystery: The Independent’s retrospective on the finale. Those comments describe the creators’ aims, not a claim that every plot question received an answer.
